Sonamarg Terror Attack: A Deadly Assault on Non-Locals, Fueled by Hate and Politics?

Must Read

The recent terror attack in Sonamarg, Kashmir on non-local infrastructure workers has sent shockwaves across the nation. Seven employees, including a doctor from Kashmir, were brutally killed in this cowardly assault. Five others were injured, two of whom were also from Kashmir. The attackers targeted workers involved in a critical infrastructure project – the Z-Morh Tunnel.

The Z-Morh Tunnel is nearing completion and is vital for year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg.

The Sonamarg attack is the first major attack on civilians in a decade in the valley, which had seen reduced militant presence since the abrogation of Article 370. It raises troubling questions about the state of affairs in Jammu and Kashmir, especially the forces driving such violence. The timing and targets of this attack hint at something deeper: hate politics of INDI-Alliace fueled by divisive rhetoric aided by terrorist enablers.

Sonamarg Attack: A Cowardly Act of Terror

The attack occurred when the workers were having dinner at their camp near Gagangir. Armed militants, under the cover of darkness, cut off the electricity before launching their assault. The attack on these infrastructure workers, many of whom did not belong to the region, was calculated and precise. It took the lives of seven infrastructure workers and injured five more. Thus, this cowardly act was a blow to India’s ongoing infrastructure development in the region.

However, beyond the physical damage to life and limb, Sonamarg’s attack speaks volumes about the mindset behind the violence.

Condemnations poured in from across the political spectrum. Union HM Amit Shah condemned the “dastardly” act, vowing a harsh response from security forces. India’s ‘Infra-Man’ Nitin Gadkari described the attack as horrific, particularly because the victims were innocent laborers working on a vital project. Yet, the political environment surrounding this attack suggests something more insidious.

Sonamarg: A Consequence Of INDI-Alliance And Its Hate-filled Rhetorics?

The Sonamarg attack appears to be more than just another episode of senseless violence. Could it have been fueled by the divisive rhetoric propagated by certain political figures, particularly the Congress and National Conference (NC)? Rahul Gandhi, on multiple occasions, has openly criticized the influx of “outsiders” into Jammu and Kashmir. During the campaigning phase, he claimed that these “outsiders’ were stealing jobs from Kashmiri locals.

Such inflammatory remarks may have planted seeds of resentment among Kashmiris, leading to non-locals being seen as unwanted intruders.

The terrorists didn’t just attack random workers; they targeted non-locals employed by a private company. While some Kashmiris got caught in the fray, the attack primarily seemed directed at those from outside the region. Could Rahul Gandhi’s and INDI-Alliance comments about “outsiders” jobs have contributed to creating a hostile environment that made such an attack inevitable? When political leaders use inflammatory language, it’s not long before it manifests into real-world consequences.

Sonamarg Attack: A Strike On Development?

It’s crucial to question the larger motive behind this terror attack in Sonamarg, Kashmir. Was this merely an act of violence against non-locals, or was it also a strategic move to derail development in Kashmir? The infrastructure workers targeted were engaged in constructing the Z-Morh Tunnel. This project would bring all-year connectivity to Sonamarg. Furthermore, it would integrate Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India in a pertinent way.

Thus, the attack on the very people building Kashmir’s future suggests that militants and forces like the TRF may be trying to halt any progress in the region.

There has always been an undercurrent in Kashmir’s militant movements to keep the state underdeveloped. An underdeveloped state is easier to radicalize and manipulate. The youth, deprived of opportunities and filled with anti-India propaganda, are more susceptible to being recruited into terrorism. The NC has a history of playing with soft-separatist tendencies to remain in power. Thus, many wonder if after 1-week into power, the Abdullah family is allowing such acts to maintain its dynastic control over Kashmir! The current NC government in J&K has a toxic legacy of emboldening terrorists as separatists.

Therefore, under NC’s watch, such acts of terror have begun to plague the valley to threaten the fragile peace in the region.

Sonamarg: Hate Politics or Revival of Militancy?

The SCO meeting in Pakistan and India’s participation in it may also play a role in the Sonamarg Attack. The attack resembles the Pakistan’s ISI’s way of derailing regional progress in Kashmir. Just a small gesture of participation in an SCO meet seems to have re-triggered the Pak-inspired militancy in the valley. Hence, many wonder that by India sitting on the same table with Pakistan, emboldens the terrorists to infuse terror in the valley.

Therefore, the Sonamarg attack seems to be a manifestation of the accusations the BJP levels against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and the hate politics of dynastic parties. These parties, the BJP argues, ensure a soft approach to Pakistan and sympathize with terrorists. Hence, they have historically allowed terrorism to fester in the region to maintain their hold on power.

By ensuring that Jammu and Kashmir remains underdeveloped, Pakistan and INDI-Alliance Sympathizers have an endless supply of disenfranchised youth to fuel the separatist agenda.

Could the Sonamarg attack be another instance of this vile politics, one that encourages terrorism while ensuring the region remains isolated from India’s developmental efforts?

Thus, the Sonamarg attack is a warning of times to come. It signals that militancy is trying to rear its ugly head under the watchful eye of the Abdullah family’s NC. Separatist leaders and Pakistan’s ISI, emboldened by the political climate, might see an opportunity to reignite tensions by targeting development workers. The terrorists’ choice of targets; non-locals and infrastructure workers; suggests that the goal was not just to claim innocent lives. It signals that the Sonamrg attack was an attempt to cripple the development that would otherwise integrate Kashmir more deeply with the rest of India.

The Sonamarg terror attack is a horrifying reminder of how easily hate, nurtured by divisive rhetoric and emboldened by political maneuvering, can turn into violence. The attack on non-local workers is not just an isolated incident. It reflects a deeper strategy at play. A hate-filled plan designed to stop development and undermine the Modi government’s efforts. Additionally, it tries to ensure that Kashmir remains trapped in a cycle of violence and underdevelopment.

The perpetrators of this attack must face the harshest consequences, but so too should those who fuel the hatred that leads to such violence.

Jammu and Kashmir’s future depends on development, integration, and the rejection of the politics of anti-India hate. All of these have held the region back for decades. Hence, it is time for India to rise above the rhetoric used by the INDI Alliance to divide the nation in the name of caste or creed! Bharat needs to focus on building prosperity in Kashmir and the rest of the nation. And the voters of each state need to reject the tall dreams sold by INDI-Alliance, for their words and intentions always manifest in destructive ways for Bharat!
