For most “peacefuls,” women are viewed as the property of men. Their main role is to serve their husbands, fathers, and brothers. The underlying belief is that a woman’s worth is tied to her physical appearance. And to keep her ‘pure’ she must conform to the male societal expectations of modesty and obedience. Consequently, it results in extreme objectification of females. This ideology strips women of their individuality and reduces them to mere objects of male desire and control.

The notion that a woman’s body must be covered or hidden to protect her from the “lustful gaze” of men is a reflection of this objectification.

The burden of male behavior is squarely placed upon women. Moreover, the legal and societal structures under Sharia fail to protect women from violence and exploitation. The Sharia laws are heavily skewed in favor of men, leaving women vulnerable and with little recourse in cases of abuse. The recent case of the headmaster in Rangia, who attempted to force a young girl to undress, is a consequence of this “peaceful” mindset. Hence, the events in Kamrup are an ugly reminder the “peacefuls” still house deeply entrenched attitudes of objectification in modern times.

The truth about the events in Kamrup’s Primary School shall be discovered soon. However, the reality of Assam is the violence propelled by “peaceful” manifestation objectification. Wherever the percentage of “peacefuls” increases, crimes and violence against women increase. Why? Because objectification of females is taught as a religious belief! Let’s hope the females in Assam get justice served soon!
