Indian industrialist Gautam Adani has received a major legal relief in the United States after a federal court dismissed the criminal case against him.
The case, filed by US prosecutors in 2024, involved allegations related to an alleged bribery scheme connected to an Indian solar-energy project. The Adani Group had consistently denied the allegations.
Brooklyn-based US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis approved the Justice Department’s request to dismiss the case on August 10. The decision brings an important legal battle against one of India’s leading industrialists to an end.
Justice Department Chose to Drop the Case
The US Justice Department argued that the case was largely foreign in nature, difficult to prove and did not fit its current enforcement priorities.
The department also questioned whether the US had sufficient jurisdiction over alleged conduct that took place primarily in India.
Adani’s defence had made similar arguments, pointing to the lack of sufficient evidence and the fact that the investors involved had not suffered losses.
The court ultimately allowed prosecutors to withdraw the charges.
A Significant Relief for Adani
The ruling marks an important development for Adani, whose group has faced intense scrutiny in recent years.
The dismissal means the criminal prosecution brought by US authorities in 2024 will no longer proceed.
At the same time, the judge questioned aspects of the Justice Department’s internal decision-making process. Those concerns relate to how prosecutors chose to abandon the case, rather than establishing wrongdoing by Adani.
Adani welcomed the decision and expressed his respect for the judicial process.
For the Indian business community, the development also removes a major legal uncertainty surrounding one of the country’s most prominent industrial groups.
