There is little doubt that the Mamata Banerjee government has been corrupt, incompetent and decadent to the core.

This government has not only left the once proud province of Bengal in ruins, but has finished the educational and industrial sectors in dire straits.

Only one thing seems to come out of Bengal now-a-days-corruption and politics.

To compound matters, the freebie culture of the West Bengal government has left the state cash strapped, desperate to raise financial resources from whereever it can find.

However, a big jolt has come across the Bengal government’s day to day functioning.

This pertains to a case involving the Tata Group.

The Matter

An arbitral tribunal has awarded Tata Motors a compensation of over Rs 766 crore for the losses incurred because of protests by Trinamool Congress that stalled its small car project at Singur in West Bengal.

The West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) is liable to pay the said amount to Tata Motors in connection with losses incurred on its manufacturing site in Singur, the automobile company said recently.

Further, Tata Motors has also been held to be entitled to recover from the respondent (WBIDC) a sum of Rs 1 crore towards the cost of the proceedings, the Tata Group added.

The total cost of the compensation coupled with the interest comes to Rs 1360 crore.

The Movement That Wrecked Bengal

The Tata Nano Singur controversy was a controversy generated by land acquisition of a proposed Tata Motors automobile factory at Singur in Hooghly districtWest Bengal, India. The factory would have been used to build the compact car Tata Nano.

The ensuing protest caused the Tata Group to relocate the factory in Sanand, Gujarat in 2008.

This incident destroyed whatever industrial potential West Bengal had. It not only wrecked the prospect of creating newer employment opportunities but also is causing exodus of Bengali youth out of the state seeking better employment opportunities.

That the Mamata government left red faced must serve as a reminder to this corrupt government that it has played with the future of ordinary youth.
