APEDA’s Role in Agri Product Exports!

Must Read

Be it Kaji Nemu (Assam Lemon), “Leteku“, jackfruit or plums which have been recently designated with G.I tag in Assam. India’s Agricultural products have been able to reach international market due to successful efforts of APEDA.

Recently, the Ministry of Commerce and Industries revealed that in the northeast area there has been an 85% increase in export of agricultural products in the last 7 years. The value has increased from $2.52 million in 2016-17 to $17 million in 2021-22. APEDA has played a significant role in this direction.

APEDA’S ROLE-

It has not only supported the farmers of Assam but also of other north eastern states like Mizoram, Arunanchal, Nagaland etc. APEDA has helped these farmers in exporting their Agricultural products to international markets. It has organised field trips for importers from Europe, South Asian and West Asian countries etc. During these field trips APEDA showcased the high quality farming practices followed by farmers for potential partnerships.

Moreover, it has held over 100 capacity building programs to spread awareness about the export potential of northeast. It also provides a platform by hosting around 20 international buyer- seller meets and trade fairs in the region. Overall, it aims to create an ecosystem wherein the producers and the processors can directly deal with the exporters. This would not only create the export potential but will also increase job opportunities for the state.

In fact, with the same vision, APEDA recently in 2022, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Assam Agricultural University in Jorhat. The intent is to conduct training programs in pre and post harvest management. This will also help boost research activities along with the export potential of that region.

On account of APEDA’s efforts, the agricultural exports from Northeast have been increasing. This is definitely worth commending for the northeast is not just a part of India but it also hold a strategic position. It is of great geopolitical significance and connects India with China, Bhutan, Myanmar etc. Thus, acting as a gateway to international markets.

APEDA, with its unwavering commitment to supporting farmers, has played a pivotal role in helping Assam’s agricultural products gain global recognition. Today, Assam’s Bao-Dhaan (red rice) and “Leteku” (Burmese grapes) are reaching US, Dubai and other international markets.
