On September 4, 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) marked a major milestone in space observation with the successful launch of EOS-05 (also known as GISAT-1A) aboard the GSLV-F17 rocket from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.

Lifting off at 2:55 AM IST, the 51.7-metre-tall launch vehicle placed the 2,367-kg spacecraft into a Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO) roughly 18 minutes later. The Technical Breakthrough: From Periodic Snapshots to Live Streams

For decades, India’s remote sensing network relied primarily on polar and low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. While LEO platforms capture high-detail imagery, their rapid orbital speeds mean they pass over a given location only during fixed intervals every few days. If a sudden flood, cloudburst, or forest fire breaks out after a satellite passes, emergency responders must wait days for the next pass.

  • Synchronized Orbit: By operating at an altitude of nearly 36,000 km, the satellite’s orbital period matches Earth’s rotation speed, keeping it hover-aligned over the Indian subcontinent.

Overcoming Past Obstacles

The success of GSLV-F17 represents a technical milestone for ISRO’s heavy-lift program. The predecessor mission (GISAT-1/EOS-03) suffered a launch failure in August 2021 due to a cryogenic upper stage anomaly. Extensive re-engineering of the vehicle’s cryogenic ignition systems ensured the success of GSLV-F17.

Following orbit-raising maneuvers using onboard propulsion, EOS-05 will be positioned into its final geostationary slot, elevating India into an elite group of nations operating continuous geo-imaging capabilities.
