The religion of peace and respect has several degrading practices towards women. Let’s examine the dehumanizing concept of Nikah Mut’ah in Islam. The word Mut’ah means ‘joy. But this Nikah is anything but that! This nikah is a temporary marriage contract permissible in Islam. This surah allows Muslim men to fornicate with women only by giving them their due compensation. However, this concept applies only to Muslim women! Captive women are free game for fornication!!! ‘Peacefuls’ are allowed to treat captured women and slaves as they want! The ‘peaceful’ community’s practice of temporary nikah has a negative impact on women. Key Features of Nikah Mut’ah
The Dynamics of Mahr or Dowry
In this Nikah, the mahr or dowry is not optional. Any amount or compensation that is agreed upon belongs solely to the woman. Once the transaction is complete the Nikah is set to be in place. The ‘contractual marriage’ allows ‘peaceful’ men to be in a sexual relationship with any woman in the book for a specified short duration of time. Does it not sound similar to the flesh trade?!! Pay and perform, is this the reality of Nikah Mut’ah?!!
The Conundrum of Inheritance Rights
The woman or contractual wife does not have any right to inheritance of the contractual husband. However, children born within this Nikah are considered legitimate. They may even have some inheritance rights to the father’s property. But there is a clause. The contractual wife has to refrain from any sexual congress or marriage till 3 months after the Nikah is over!
Thus, the Nikah allows a ‘peaceful’ to attain temporary pleasure in the arms of a pseudo-wife! Once the Nikah is over, the woman has to fend for herself. The woman does not get any alimony or maintenance! While the kids are recognized, they are not the responsibility of the contractual husband! There is another gray area of death of the husband during the contract. The inheritance and alimony in this case is dependent on the local Imam. Thus, the nikah is a biased practice that is dangerous to the long-term well-being of the social construct of family and women!
Alimony and The Temporary Nature of the Nikah
The temporary nature of Nikah Mut’ah dehumanizes women. It allows poor families to hawk their daughters while retaining a shred of social dignity. The woman’s temporary marital status is a ‘peaceful’ man’s convenience. The temporary nature of this marriage is primarily due to a lack of commitment on the man’s side. Do such marriages undermine women’s emotional well-being and social standing?!! Yes! The concept allows women to believe themselves as a non-human inconsequential chattel in a man’s life.
The temporary nature allows for the sexual exploitation of women in Islam. This nikah allows men to maintain their pseudo-holy status while engaging in prostitution! As per Islam, Christian and Jew women are also women of the book! Thus, for devout Muslim men, this form of Nikah permits them to solicit sexual pleasure with almost any woman on earth!

This is where things get tricky! The concept is prevalent in Shia Muslim societies. Iranian societies have a large number of prostitution rungs running under this nikah concept. Shia communities in Iraq also seem to encourage this archaic practice.
Rumors state that Kerala and Hyderabad Muslim communities also practiced this custom. This is stated to be the primary cause of increasing Muslim demography in the region. The women in these states were supposedly exchanged for jobs for their brothers, fathers, etc., or even hard cash with Saudi Sheikhs. However, they are not shunned in Muslim society after the contract is over! Since the practice is accepted by Islamic scholars like Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, they are allowed to repeatedly exchange their sexual favors to bargain for a better life for themselves or their families.

Recently, a social media post stated that Indonesia still practices Nikah Mut’ah. The reports showed Muslim ghettos where devout Muslim women exchanging their flesh for favor under this concept. The entire community accepted this practice as a holy command of Islam.
The Sad Reality
The impact of Nikah Mut’ah on women is undoubtedly dehumanizing and brutal. While Islamic scholars, especially Shia scholars, emphasize the flexibility of this marriage; it is essentially a horrific way to ensure that ‘peacefuls’ experience ‘joy’ while staying devout in this temporary marital framework.
Many would state that this practice is no longer widespread! But understanding the roots of this concept shall help such detractors to face the reality of women in Islam. Women’s rights, within the Islamic framework, are usually similar to that of a chattel. She is treated as an extension of her husband or father! Her individuality is limited to within the burqa! Let those who preach secularism face the ugly reality of the degradation of women in Islam!
