Yesterday, PM Modi inaugurated the ‘Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav’ at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The three day Mahotsav is a landmark event, first of its own kind, showcasing the vibrant and rich culture of Northeast India.
The grand festival will showcase the beauty, diversity, craftmanship and heritage of our beautiful eight Northeastern states. These being- Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, and Sikkim.

North East- The Ashtalakshmi of India
PM Modi while unveiling the festival, talked about Goddess Lakshmi and how she is represents health, wealth and prosperity. He then drew a parallel between the eight forms of Goddess Lakshmi and the eight northeastern states. Further he explained how the eight states represent the eight forms of Ashtalakshmi and why the festival is named as ‘Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav.’
Beginning with the first form of Lakshmi, i.e., Adi Lakshmi, PM Modi highlighted how the entire Northeast India is full of Adi culture. He gave example of the Hornbill festival of Nagaland, cherry blossom of Meghalaya and Bihu of Assam etc.
Explaining the significance of the second form of Lakshmi, i.e., Dhan Lakshmi. He said that the entire northeast India has blessings of Dhan Lakshmi. For it is rich with minerals, natural resources, biodiversity and has a huge potential for growth especially in the renewable energy sector..
Talking about the third form of goddess- Dhanya Lakshmi. He explained that Dhanya lakshmi has been very kind to entire northeast India. The region is a pioneer in organic farming, natural farming and agriculture. For example, Sikkim is the first Indian state to be fully organic. Similarly, Gaja lakshmi has blessed the region with dense lush green forests and wildlife. Santan Lakshmi has blessed the region with abundance of creativity which is reflected in form of craftmanship. For example, Muga silk of Assam, Moirang Phi of Manipur and Chakheshang Shawl of Nagaland etc.
Listing how all the forms of goddess Lakshmi and how she has blessed the region. He highlighted that the Mahotsav is a celebration of northeast India’s potential. “Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav is a celebration of the better future of the North East,” exclaimed PM Modi. He added that the 21st century belong to East, i.e., Asia and India. “I firmly believe that the coming time in India belongs to Eastern India, to our North-East,” he said. Further he explained how the Ashtalakshmi Mahotsav will play a pivotal role in bringing this transformation.

What To Expect At The Mahotsav?
The three day Mahotsav (December 6th to 8th) is an event like never before, a spectacle for eyes! Showcasing the rich culture, craft, and heritage of northeast. It features state specific pavilions and exhibitions to promote the handicraft products etc. The event also features the rich culture and fashion of northeast. According to the official site, the Mahotsav will also feature a fashion show, highlighting the fusion of contemporary design and the traditional textiles. A design conclave will also be held wherein industry experts and global fashion experts will be present. This will give a big boost to the textile industry of northeast by brining in investment and paving way for collaborations.
Apart from these, be ready to be swept away in the symphony of the hills. For the event will also feature the soulful melodies and the foot tapping beats of the northeast India. Ranging from the classic Bihu dance, the chivalrous war dance of Nagaland to the mesmerising Tai Khamti Peacock Dance of Arunachal Pradesh. Around 300 artists from the northeast will be brining the cultural essence of northeast to life. Furthermore, there will also be a digital selfie area, wherein youngsters can immerse themselves in vibrant culture of northeast India.
