The opposition’s latest political narrative is completely falling apart. Recently, Rahul Gandhi visited the island and aggressively attacked the ₹92,000 crore Great Nicobar Development Project. He called the initiative to build a transshipment port and military base a “scam” and cried about ecological damage and deforestation. However, this sudden love for the environment exposes a massive double standard. Consequently, the Great Nicobar project propaganda is easily shattered when you look at how the Congress party treated India’s infrastructure and heritage in the past.

The Ram Setu Hypocrisy
To understand the sheer incompetence of the opposition, we must look back at the 2000s. During the UPA era, the Congress government enthusiastically pushed the Sethusamudram Ship Channel Project. Crucially, this specific project required cutting directly through the sacred Ram Setu. The Congress leadership was perfectly happy to destroy an ancient, religious, and ecological marvel. In fact, in 2007, they even filed an affidavit denying the existence of Lord Ram. Thankfully, in 2018, the BJP government officially stopped the destruction, telling the Supreme Court that Ram Setu would not be touched. Therefore, the Congress crying over trees today is complete hypocrisy.
Dodging the Hormuz Question
Furthermore, the opposition’s strategic logic is entirely flawed. Recently, Rahul Gandhi panicked in Parliament, warning that the Middle East war would block the Strait of Hormuz and destroy India’s energy supply. Yet, when journalists questioned him about securing our own maritime chokepoints, he completely avoided the topic. Iran uses the Strait of Hormuz as massive strategic leverage. Similarly, the Great Nicobar project sits right next to the Strait of Malacca. By opposing this port, the Congress is actively trying to stop India from securing a military and trade advantage just like the one Iran holds.
Boosting the ASEAN Trade Network
Instead of a scam, the Great Nicobar project is a geostrategic absolute necessity. Because India relies heavily on international shipping, this mega transshipment hub will massively boost our trade network. Currently, our cargo ships have to rely on ports in Singapore or Colombo. By building our own massive port on the southernmost tip of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, trade between India and ASEAN countries will skyrocket. Ultimately, it brings immense wealth and capital directly into the Indian economy.
Securing India’s Future
At the end of the day, a rising superpower cannot afford to be weak on its borders. The Great Nicobar project propaganda being pushed by the Congress proves they do not understand modern geopolitics. While China aggressively expands its naval presence in the Indian Ocean, India desperately needs a stronghold to counter them. This project provides a critical military base and trade hub that secures our future in the event of a global conflict. Opposing a project of this magnitude simply shows how disconnected the opposition is from India’s actual security needs.
