On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, PM Modi had visited Ladakh, wherein he had launched the construction of the Shinkun La tunnel. In fact, during the ‘first blast’ of the tunnel, PM Modi termed it as “a game-changer for Ladakh’s infrastructure.”
About Shinkun La Tunnel-
- The Shinkun La tunnel project, consists of a 4.1 km long twin tube tunnel which will connect Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh’s Leh via the Nimmu- Padam- Darcha road.
- It will be constructed at an altitude of 15,800 feet above sea level
- Thus, once constructed, the Shinkun La tunnel will be world’s highest tunnel, surpassing China’s Mila Tunnel (15,590 feet).

Significance-
- Improved connectivity: The tunnel would cut down on the amount of time it takes to get from Leh to other areas of Ladakh. At present, the route is frequently hampered by difficult terrain and weather. The tunnel will provide an all weather route and will facilitate smoother and faster transportation.
- Economic Impact: The tunnel will help improve the connectivity of the region. This will facilitate faster movement of goods, increase tourism and will help boost business opportunities. Thereby, leading to overall economic growth of the region.
- Accessibility: The tunnel will provide a safer route for travel especially in adverse weather conditions. Thereby, reducing the risks associated with high altitude travel and enhancing the quality of life for the residents.
- Boost Tourism: By providing safer and all year round accessibility, Ladakh is expected to attract more tourists. Thus, boosting travel and tourism industry in the region. This will benefit the local communities and boost regional development.
- Strategic significance: Above all, the Shinkun La Tunnel is very important from a strategic standpoint. At present, the route remains snow bound for atleast five months every year. The construction of this tunnel will enable quicker mobilisation of troops and will enhance logistical support for military operations in the region. Overall, it will greatly enhance border infrastructure in the Eastern Ladakh region especially considering the ongoing tension with China. It will not only promote regional development, economic growth but is also help enhance our national security.
