In a major policy decision addressing both operational continuity and national youth aspirations, the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved an additional two-year engagement period for Agniveers enrolled under the Agnipath scheme.
The landmark announcement, made directly by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General N.S. Raja Subramani—comes just weeks before the first batch of approximately 18,000 Agniveers was scheduled to complete their initial four-year tenure. Under the revised framework, the 75% of Agniveers who were previously slated to exit into civilian life will now be offered an extended two-year engagement window, complete with higher remuneration, enhanced Seva Nidhi benefits, and a direct pathway toward permanent absorption into the regular Armed Forces.
Key Upgrades to the Framework
The policy review reflects extensive operational feedback from military commanders since the Agnipath scheme’s launch on June 14, 2022. Rather than forcing a rigid exit after four years, the government has institutionalized a performance-based bridge to permanent enlistment.
-
Extended 2-Year Engagement: The 75% cohort previously set for civilian transition will now be offered an additional 2 years of active service based on willingness and performance.

Pathway to Regular Enrolment: Upon completing the total 6-year period (4+2 years), these Agniveers will be eligible for enrolment as regular soldiers, contingent upon objective merit-based criteria.
-
Enhanced Financial Package: The second engagement period comes with higher monthly remuneration and a significantly augmented Seva Nidhi corpus upon completion.

Streamlined Recruitment Overhaul: To ensure higher candidate quality, the military recruitment process has been updated to conduct written examinations before physical endurance tests.
-
Skill & Educational Upgradation: Service credits allow Class 10 pass-outs to achieve Class 12 equivalence, alongside formally accredited national skill certification.
“Today is a very significant day for the Indian Defence Forces and for our Agniveers. The Cabinet has created a pathway for all Agniveers to be absorbed into the Indian Defence Forces… This second engagement period will give them higher remuneration and an enhanced Seva Nidhi package.”
— General N.S. Raja Subramani, Chief of Defence Staff
Strategic Reality
The decision effectively dismantles the political opposition’s primary critique that the Agnipath scheme abandoned 75% of trained soldiers after four years without job security.
By extending service to six years before final absorption decisions, the Armed Forces retain combat-hardened, battle-ready personnel who have already mastered high-altitude warfare, drone operation, and modern infantry tactics.
Silencing Political Toolkits
For over two years, political opportunists attempted to weaponize the Agnipath scheme to generate disaffection among rural youth and defense aspirants. Today’s decision demonstrates that the Modi government and military leadership evaluate policy through operational outcomes rather than rigid ideology.
By providing higher pay, prolonged service, formal educational credentials, and a realistic shot at a lifelong military career, the Centre has strengthened national security while guaranteeing a bright, honorable future for Bharat’s brave young soldiers.
