Dissatisfaction With The Draft

Within the Cachar district, the local BJP unit expressed its dissatisfaction as the draft designates the Silchar Lok Sabha seat for a Scheduled Caste (SC) candidate. Consequently, the current MP representing the seat, Rajdeep Roy, would be unable to contest the 2024 polls.

The proposed changes in the boundaries of each Assembly seat in the district have also sparked opposition from local leaders who are against the delimitation draft.

Prodip Hazarika, a leader from the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and a five-time MLA, shared his concerns. Hazarika warned that if the draft is not modified, a protest would be organized in his area.

Assamese Interests

In contrast, Himanta Biswa Sarma affirmed that the draft delimitation would serve the best interests of the original inhabitants of Assam.

Known for his strong stance against Bangladeshi Muslim infiltration in Assam, Sarma has consistently raised the issue. Since becoming Chief Minister, allegations have emerged claiming that his actions specifically targeted Bengali-speaking Muslims in the state.

It is to protect the original inhabitants of Assam from Bangladeshi infiltrators. Sarma also acknowledged the failure of the NRC to address this issue. He stressed his government’s support for a new NRC in the state.

Himanta Sarma’s Stance On Delimitation

The state government has expressed willingness to conduct a re-verification of the NRC in districts adjacent to the Bangladesh border. It cited concerns about the inclusion of names of Bangladeshi infiltrators in the NRC.

Despite the discontent among certain BJP leaders and AGP regarding the draft delimitation for Assam, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma remains resolute in his belief. The draft will safeguard the interests of the original inhabitants of Assam. While acknowledging the concerns raised by various stakeholders, Sarma emphasizes the importance of implementing the delimitation to protect the state from infiltration. It will preserve its unique identity. As the discussions and deliberations continue, it remains to be seen how the draft delimitation will ultimately shape the political landscape of Assam and its impact on future elections.
