In a shocking display of selective outrage and state overreach, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) administration in Kerala, headed by Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, has filed criminal charges against popular digital vlogger Amrit Singh Darren. His offense? Documenting the ground reality inside Fort Kochi’s famous Kashi Art Café, which prominently displays portraits of Pakistan’s founding father, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, while serving beef recipes under a name derived from one of Hinduism’s most sacred holy cities.
Rather than addressing the ideological provocation of glorifying the architect of Partition—responsible for the slaughter and displaced lives of millions of Hindus and Sikhs—Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan took to X (formerly Twitter) to hunt down the messenger. Labeling the factual exposé an “attempt to disturb communal harmony,” Satheesan announced police action against the vlogger while offering a total free pass to the establishment’s controversial décor and culinary choices.
What the Exposé Uncovered: Jinnah Icons & Sacred Namesake
In a widely shared Instagram video, vlogger Amrit Singh Darren (@littichokha_up) documented his visit to Kashi Art Café in Fort Kochi. Fearing state retribution, the vlogger began his post with a warning that the Kerala government would be held responsible if any harm befell him following his video release.
Inside the cafe, the vlogger highlighted two glaring realities:
-
Open Display of Jinnah: Prominent wall portraits featuring Mohammad Ali Jinnah—the Muslim League leader who spearheaded the 1947 Partition of Bharat. “This was the first time I saw Jinnah’s picture openly displayed in India,” the vlogger noted, questioning how a state government allows such glorification within its borders.
-
Appropriation of Holy Sanctuaries: The cafe uses the revered name of Kashi (Varanasi)—the eternal abode of Lord Shiva—while serving dishes like “Beef Steak,” “Minced Beef Omelette,” and “Asian Fried Beef Bowl.”

While the cafe’s official social media handles openly showcase both the Jinnah portraits and their beef menu, the state government turned a blind eye to the public sentiment of millions, choosing instead to silence the individual who brought it to light.
Appeasement Politics: UDF, IUML, and the Jinnah Legacy
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan’s aggressive move to prosecute the vlogger has laid bare the political compulsions of his governing coalition. The Congress-led UDF government relies heavily on the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)—a political ally that shares direct historical lineage with Jinnah’s pre-independence Muslim League.
Satheesan recently defended his coalition setup by describing the IUML as a “secular party” and a “necessary evil” to prevent radical space from being captured by extremist fronts.
Double Standards of Kerala’s “Secularism”
The crackdown on Amrit Singh Darren demonstrates how “secularism” in UDF-ruled Kerala has mutated into a one-way street. When patriotic citizens raise legitimate concerns regarding the normalization of Partition icons or the insensitive commercial appropriation of Hindu holy names, the state apparatus swings into action to suppress their voice.
The message sent by the Satheesan government is clear: in their quest to preserve coalition politics, the sentiments of the majority community and the historic memory of Bharat’s Partition are completely disposable. Nationalist legal groups and digital content creators have pledged support to the vlogger, demanding an immediate withdrawal of the FIR and an audit into political entities promoting Jinnah’s legacy on Indian soil.
