India Ranks Second Globally In Job Market Readiness: QS World Future Skills Index

India has secured second position globally in “future of work” category and in digital skills in the recently released QS world future skills index 2025. Notably, the country secured a score of 99.1, trailing only behind U.S. Apart from this, India secured fourth place in A.I and green skills globally. Thereby, showcasing India’s preparedness for future high tech driven jobs. Overall, the Index, ranked India on 25th position globally and categorised it as a “future skills contender.” Thus reflecting the significant progress made by the country in equipping its workforce.

Mr. Nunzio Quacquarelli, the CEO and Managing Director of QS Quacquarelli Symonds, congratulated PM Modi on this significant achievement. In form of a post on X, he shared the news and commended PM Modi’s leadership for launching initiatives like Skill India. He wrote, “A proud moment for India. @QSCorporate World Skills Index ranks India 2nd for Digital Skills ahead of Canada and Germany. Under the guidance of PM @narendramodi initiatives like Skills India, they are building a workforce for the 21st Century, reshaping it’s global standing and creating opportunities for future generations.”

Responding to his tweet on X, PM Modi lauded India’s ranking and and thanked QS Index for sharing their insights. He tweeted, “This is heartening to see! Over the last decade, our Government has worked on strengthening our youth by equipping them with skills that enable them to become self-reliant and create wealth. We have also leveraged the power of technology to make India a hub for innovation and enterprise. The insights from the QS World Future Skills Index are valuable as we progress towards prosperity and youth empowerment.”

Key Criteria In QS Index

The QS index, scores countries on four parameters namely-

  • Skill Fit- It measures how much the skill sets of graduates are aligned with the employers demands. India scored 59.1 in this parameter.
  • Academic Readiness- The higher education system’s ability to prepare students for evolving job market scenario. India with a score of 89.9 ranked 26th globally in this category.
  • Future For Work- Evaluates the preparedness of the country to focus on and develop future ready skill like A.I and other digital skills. Ahead of developed countries like Germany and Canada, India ranked 2nd in this category with a score of 99.1.
  • Economic Transformation- Evaluates the countries readiness in terms of innovation and workforce efficiency for a skill driven growth. India got 58.3 score in this category with 40th rank.

The QS index then categorizes countries into four tiers- aspiring, practitioner, contender, and pioneer based on their performances. India with an overall rank of 25, has been categorised as “future skills contender.”

Overall, the report highlights that while the country has made significant progress, there are some challenges as well. Such as the the inability of the Indian graduates to keep up with the continuously evolving market pace. To shorten this gap further, the report recommends continued and lifelong skilling programs along with investments in building innovation capacity to further strengthen the country’s global competitiveness.
