Security Forces Neutralize 12 Naxal Terrorists in Bijapur Encounter
In a significant victory for India’s ongoing fight against Naxalism, twelve Naxal terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in the forests of Bijapur, Chhattisgarh, on January 16, 2025. The operation, involving approximately 1,500 security personnel, showcased the unwavering commitment of the state police and central forces to eradicate Maoist insurgency from the region.
The Joint Operation
The encounter unfolded during a meticulously planned anti-Naxal operation in the dense forests of south Bijapur near the Telangana border. Teams from the District Reserve Guard (DRG) of three districts, five battalions of CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action), and the 229th battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) collaborated in the mission.
The operation was launched based on intelligence reports indicating the presence of senior Maoist cadres in the area. The forces ambushed the Maoists, initiating an intense firefight around 9 a.m. The encounter continued with intermittent gunfire throughout the day, eventually resulting in the elimination of 12 Naxal operatives.
Weapons were recovered from the encounter site, and security forces confirmed that the operation remains active as they continue to comb the area for further threats.
Casualties and Challenges
While the operation resulted in significant losses for the Naxals, it was not without challenges. Earlier in the day, two security personnel sustained injuries in an improvised explosive device (IED) blast. Such incidents highlight the persistent threat posed by Maoists, who have frequently deployed IEDs in the region to target both security forces and civilians.
Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma condemned the Naxals’ use of IEDs, calling it a “cowardly act.” He emphasized the indiscriminate nature of these attacks, which have also claimed the lives of animals. Despite the injuries, the two affected personnel are reported to be in stable condition.
Progress in the Fight Against Naxalism
This month alone, security forces have neutralized 26 Naxals in Bijapur, showing the intensified efforts following a tragic IED attack on January 6 that claimed the lives of eight security personnel and a driver. The momentum against Naxalism reflects the government’s steadfast resolve to uproot this internal threat.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated the government’s goal of eliminating naxalism by March 31, 2026. On multiple occasions, Shah has emphasized that the nation is progressing steadily toward this objective. The success of operations like the one in Bijapur demonstrates the effectiveness of coordinated efforts between state and central forces and the strategic use of intelligence.
A Path Toward Peace
India’s battle against Naxalism has been long and arduous, but recent successes signal a turning tide. From curbing Maoist influence in their strongholds to recovering significant caches of arms and ammunition, the nation is steadily advancing toward a future free from the scourge of Naxal violence.
This victory in Bijapur is not only a triumph for the security forces but also a reassurance to the people of India that peace and stability are within reach. As operations continue, the nation’s collective resolve to end Naxalism and ensure safety and development in the affected regions remains firm.
