Kerala Congress Apologises Amidst Comparing Modi to ‘God’ & Mocking the Pope

Must Read

Amidst significant backlash over a controversial X post that equated Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ‘God’ and mocked the Pope, the Kerala unit of Congress issued an apology. However, their statement appeared more self-congratulatory and critical of PM Modi than genuinely apologetic.

The Controversial Post and Immediate Reaction

The controversy erupted when the Kerala Congress shared a post on X, featuring a picture of Prime Minister Narendra Modi conversing with Pope Francis during the recent G7 Summit. The accompanying caption read, “Finally, the Pope got a chance to meet God!” This post was perceived as offensive, particularly to the Christian community, as it seemingly equated Modi to Jesus Christ, given that the Pope’s deity is Jesus.

The Apology: More Critique Than Contrition?

In their response to the backlash, the Kerala Congress took to X, stating, “The entire people of this country know that it is not the tradition of the Indian National Congress to insult and disparage any religion, religious priests, and idols. Congress is a movement that unites all religions and faiths and leads the people forward in a friendly atmosphere.”

While they asserted that no Congress worker would insult the Pope, the statement also took a jab at PM Modi. “No Congress worker would even entertain the remotest thought of insulting the Pope, whom Christians around the world see as God-like. However, the Congress has no qualms about mocking Narendra Modi, who insults the believers of this country by calling himself God.”

BJP’s Accusations Against Kerala Congress

In response, Kerala BJP state president K Surendran accused the Kerala Congress of being influenced by radical elements. He stated, “The @INCIndia Kerala ‘X’ handle, seemingly run by radical Islamists or Urban Naxals, continues to post derogatory and humiliating content against nationalistic leaders. Now, it has even stooped to mocking the respected Pope and the Christian community. It’s certain that the AICC General Secretary from Kerala, @kcvenugopalmp, is aware of this. The question is, what are @RahulGandhi and @kharge’s interests in supporting this?”

Unreserved Apology Kerala Congress

In their final statement, the Kerala Congress offered an unreserved apology for any distress caused to the Christian community. “We apologize unreservedly if this post has caused any emotional or psychological distress to Christians,” the party said.

Context of the Controversy

The photo at the center of the controversy was taken during the G7 Summit. The world leaders, including Pope Francis and PM Modi, gathered to discuss various global issues, including the pros and cons of artificial intelligence. The post’s intent appeared to be a satirical comment on Modi’s self-perception. However, it backfired, leading to widespread criticism and calls for an apology.
