Recent discussions at Azim Premji University regarding the annihilation of Hinduism have ignited a fiery debate. Where are the boundaries of academic discourse? It raises concerns about the ethical responsibilities of academic institution.

Universities, traditionally hailed as bastions of critical thinking and intellectual diversity, are now facing scrutiny for their role in harboring anti-Hindu sentiments. The emergence of these discussions paints a troubling picture of academic spaces becoming breeding grounds for divisive ideologies rather than platforms for constructive dialogue and understanding.

The notion of annihilating Hinduism runs counter to the principles of tolerance and pluralism that underpin a democratic society. While academic freedom is essential for the pursuit of knowledge and the exploration of controversial ideas, it must be exercised with prudence and respect for the diverse beliefs and identities of individuals.

The concern over the indoctrination of youth through such discourse is valid, as educational institutions play a pivotal role in shaping the worldview and values of future generations. The propagation of extremist ideologies under the guise of academic inquiry not only undermines the credibility of these institutions but also poses a threat to social cohesion.

Earlier Instance at Azim Premji University

The plight of Rishi Tiwari serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of Hinduphobia and ideological intolerance within academic institutions.

The controversy erupted following a minor altercation between Tiwari and a Muslim student on May 2, 2022. Subsequently, Tiwari faced relentless harassment and discrimination from both students and faculty members. They labeled him as a ‘Sanghi’ and a ‘radical Hindu’ due to his affiliation with Benares Hindu University and his faith.

Escalation and Social Media Abuse:

Tiwari found himself targeted by a vicious campaign on social media, with Instagram stories openly condemning him and inciting hostility towards his supporters. The narrative spun around Tiwari portrayed him as an aggressor, solely based on his Hindu identity, exacerbating the polarization within the university community.

Lack of Fair Process:

Despite Tiwari’s pleas for fairness and due process, the university administration remained silent. They left him in a state of uncertainty. He was swiftly expelled from campus activities and accommodation. He faced prejudicial punishment without concrete evidence against him.

Certain faculty members further fueled the narrative against Tiwari, calling for solidarity against him and branding him as an Islamophobe. The rush to judgment and the absence of nuance underscored the toxic environment prevailing within the university.

Double Standards

Moreover, the question of double standards arises when considering how similar discourse targeting other communities would be received. It is imperative that all forms of hate speech and incitement to violence, regardless of the targeted group, be unequivocally condemned and addressed with the appropriate measures to uphold the principles of equality and justice.
