Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has once again dragged the Kashmir issue onto the global stage. Speaking at the 81st United Nations General Assembly session in New York, Erdogan declared that disputes in South Asia, specifically including the Kashmir issue, should be resolved through dialogue and UN resolutions.
This diplomatic provocation is not an isolated incident. Erdogan has made it a predictable habit, repeatedly raising Kashmir at the UNGA in recent years. This latest outburst comes just weeks after Turkey signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, formally cementing the open military alignment of Ankara with Islamabad.
The Man Behind the Microphone
Erdogan is no ordinary geopolitical leader. He has systematically dismantled the secular foundations of Turkey, packed institutions with loyalists, and turned his country into a vocal amplifier for Islamist causes worldwide. His foreign policy is driven less by national interest and more by a desire to project himself as the protector of the global Ummah, especially when it comes to defending Pakistan.
His support for Islamabad is ideological and absolute. During the 2025 military escalation following the Pahalgam terror attack, when India launched Operation Sindoor against terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir, Erdogan stood firmly with Islamabad. Turkey publicly expressed solidarity and provided political cover for a state sponsor of terrorism. India delivered a befitting military reply on the ground, exposing the absolute limits of this so called brotherhood when faced with real hard power.
The Economic Mess in Turkey
While Erdogan lectures the world on Kashmir, his own house is in deep economic trouble. Turkey continues to struggle with crippling inflation, which hovered above 31 percent in August 2026. The national economy remains highly fragile, growth projections have been slashed, and ordinary Turkish citizens are paying the brutal price for years of unorthodox economic policies. Yet, the same leader who cannot stabilise his own currency consistently finds the time to interfere in the internal matters of India from the UN stage.
The Clear Stand of India
The position of India remains uncompromising. Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and inalienable part of India. There is absolutely no role for third party mediation.
The repeated UNGA interventions by Erdogan are nothing but calculated attempts to internationalise a strictly bilateral matter. It is a performance designed purely to please Pakistan and pander to his domestic constituency.
The Hypocritical Pattern
Every time Erdogan raises Kashmir, he follows the exact same script. He shows selective outrage, makes zero mention of the illegal occupation of Kashmiri territory by Pakistan, shows zero concern for the cross border terrorism Islamabad exports, and maintains complete silence on the actual ground realities. The leadership in Ankara continues to play the same tired card, even as Turkey faces severe economic pressure and strategic isolation on multiple global fronts.
India has seen this diplomatic theatre before. The difference today is that New Delhi no longer feels the need to be overly polite about such provocations. The rhetoric of Erdogan changes absolutely nothing on the ground. Kashmir remains exactly what it is, an inseparable part of India.
