PM Modi apologized to the nation and the Marathi community. A while back, in a moment that left the nation in shock, a bust of the revered Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was toppled by strong winds at Sindhudurg. And this disaster spiraled into a political storm. The Shivaji statue debacle handed a big weapon into the opposition’s hand. The Opposition wasted no time in pouncing on the BJP MahaYuti government.
INDI Allaince’s accusations ran wild from shoddy construction to disrespect to one of Bharat’s most venerated heroes. Hence, the bust going bust wasn’t just a structural failure; it was a blow to the BJP’s image in Maharashtra. However, PM Modi did a UNO reverse and dealt a masterstroke at his latest rally in Palghar. Let’s explore!
An Apology and A Bow By PM Modi
In an unprecedented move, PM Modi did what the opposition least expected. While addressing a rally in Palghar, Maharashtra, PM Modi bowed low and apologized to Shivaji Maharaj. He states that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is not just a name or a king. Thereafter, he states that Shivaji Maharaj’s glory is similar to that of a Mahapurush equal to deities. Thus, he bowed his head at the feet of the idol and begged an apology to ‘his’ deity!
PM Modi’s powerful apology echoed the gravity of the situation. And he took the wind right off the INDI Alliance’s sails by accepting the blame!
pic.twitter.com/WKOREc3VYz

PM Modi didn’t just apologize to Shivaji Maharaj; he extended his remorse to the people of Maharashtra. He acknowledged that the event may have hurt the feelings of the people in the state. And so the minute he stepped foot in the Maratha Bhumi he chose to first apologize to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj over the statue collapse. Thereafter, PM Modi asked the people to understand his deep remorse. Also, he asked them to compare the BJP’s actions to his opponents’ actions, who are too big-headed to apologize for slighting National Heros like Savarkar. Hence, PM Modi was seen trying to mend the emotional and political damage caused by the disaster.
The Bust Goes Bust: What Went Wrong?

The collapse of Shivaji Maharaj’s statue at Sindhudurg was assisted by the acts of nature. However; its catastrophic failure also exposed the cracks in its conception and construction. Reports indicate that the statue, installed with much fanfare, was not designed to withstand the region’s extreme weather conditions. Bharat has seen unforeseen weather conditions this year in the nation. Extreme heat resulted in extreme storms. Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Telangana were either parched or drowning in rains.
Hence, the bust of Shivaji Maharaj was unable to face the fury of nature and crumbled during a storm.
The Opposition has seized this opportunity to slam the BJP-led MahaYuti government for what they describe as “disrespectful negligence.” They question the quality of the materials used. Thereafter, they allege corruption. And finally, they wonder if cost-cutting measures were prioritized over structural integrity. They argue that the statue, symbolizing the pride and spirit of Maharashtra, was not given the due respect it deserved. The narrative is clear: if the BJP can’t protect Shivaji’s legacy, how can they safeguard the state’s interests?
A Political Windstorm: The Fallout
The Shivaji statue collapse has blown up into a political windstorm, with the BJP on the defensive. PM Modi’s public apology, while a rare and humbling gesture, may not be enough to quell the outrage. The Opposition is demanding accountability and milking the collapse for all its worth in terms of vote share.
The Sindhudurg incident has granted the opposition a potent weapon to use against the MahaYuti alliance.
With elections just a few weeks ahead, the road ahead for the BJP in Maharashtra is now fraught with challenges. The collapse of the Shivaji bust may just be the beginning of a larger narrative. The people may already be prompted to question the party’s competence and commitment to Maharashtra’s cultural and historical icons. The coming days will reveal whether PM Modi’s humble apology can repair the damage or if the winds of change will continue to batter the BJP’s stronghold in Maharashtra. Let’s see if Maharashtra has decided to forgive the BJP or punish it in the coming state elections!
