In 2021, the hospital faced severe backlash when security footage showed how a nurse assaulted a newborn. The abuse resulted in the baby’s hand being fractured. During the ensuing FIR and investigations, the nation came to know that the hospital was unregistered. And still, the hospital that had a serious lapse in security protocols and was running unregistered, was allowed to function under AAP’s administration. Funnily enough, they even regularised the establishment!

  1. Expired License: The license of the hospital where seven babies died license had expired on 31st March 2024. Thus, for nearly two months before the fire the establishment went back to being an unregulated medical facility.
  2. Overcrowding: Reports state that the hospital had authorization for only five beds. However, it had over ten beds installed. At the time of the fire, twelve newborns were admitted to the facility.
  3. Lack of Fire Safety Measures: News agencies note the absence of working fire extinguishers. Moreover, no safety measures like emergency exits were in place.
  4. Unqualified Personnel: Reports show that the doctors on duty were BAMS degree holders. It seems they were not qualified to handle neonatal intensive care. However, they were left in charge of innocent lives when the emergency occurred!

The loss of life of little babies deserves accountability from AAP and CM Arvind Kejriwal. Heads should roll for the systemic failure in healthcare regulation and oversight. The public demands answers:

  • Why was an unregistered hospital regularized in the first place? Why was the facility allowed to operate after the expiry of its license?
  • What steps were taken to ensure fire safety in healthcare facilities? Why are inspectors not suspended?
  • Why were unqualified personnel allowed to handle critical care for newborns?

A Wake-Up Call for AAP and CM Kejriwal

The Delhi government has ordered a Magisterial Inquiry into the incident. However, simply instituting an inquiry without offering the required resin=gantion is sheer shameless. Thus, Delhi wants tangible actions like resignation or suspension to showcase the severity of the crime. Someone from the Arvind Kejriwal administration must show moral accountability for the incident!
