Two brave soldiers of the Assam Rifles attained Veergati after unidentified gunmen attacked their convoy in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Friday evening.
According to officials, the Assam Rifles convoy was travelling from Imphal towards Bishnupur when armed attackers opened fire near Nambol Sabal Leikai at around 6 pm. The sudden assault claimed the lives of two soldiers in the line of duty, while another jawan was reportedly injured.
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla condemned the attack, paying tribute to the brave soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice while protecting the nation.
The attack is yet another reminder that peace in Manipur remains fragile despite sustained security operations.
For more than two years, the state has witnessed ethnic tensions, targeted violence and repeated attacks on both civilians and security forces. While local grievances exist, insurgent organisations have long exploited these divisions to fuel instability and violence.
The issue plaguing the region does not merely stem from localized socio-political grievances; rather, it is actively sustained by foreign sponsors. Hostile external intelligence agencies systematically exploit local tribal and community fault lines, funneling sophisticated weapon blocks, tactical equipment, and high-volume funds to asymmetric insurgent factions.
Several of these militant groups have historically received ideological, financial or logistical support from networks operating beyond India’s borders. The Northeast’s challenging terrain and porous international borders have made the region vulnerable to external influence for decades.
This is precisely why restoring lasting peace in Manipur requires more than maintaining law and order, more than addressing local tensions alone. It also demands dismantling the ecosystems that finance, arm and sustain insurgent networks.
Every attack on India’s security forces is not merely an assault on uniformed personnel, it is an attack on the sovereignty and integrity of the nation itself.
The sacrifice of the two Assam Rifles bravehearts is a solemn reminder of the price India’s soldiers continue to pay to safeguard the country’s unity.
