In a horrifying incident that has sent shockwaves across Kerala. Tragedy struck a Jehovah’s Witnesses convention in Kalamassery, Ernakulam, located in the Kochi.

Multiple blasts rocked the Zamra International Convention & Exhibition Centre. Approximately 2,000 people had gathered for the final day of their three-day meeting. The incident resulted in one fatality and left around 40 individuals injured, with several in critical condition.

Jehovah’s Witnesses is a Christian denomination known for their distinctive beliefs and practices. The convention was part of their annual gathering, where larger assemblies, called Regional Conventions, take place.

The Blasts

The incident unfolded around 9 AM on a Sunday morning, with the first explosion occurring at that time. It was followed by several more over the next hour.

Some attendees suffered injuries directly from the blasts. Others sustained harm while attempting to exit the convention hall.

The situation prompted a swift response from local authorities. To ensure the best possible care for those with burn injuries, specialist doctors were summoned from Kottayam Government Medical College to Kalamassery Medical College.

The exact cause of the blasts remains unknown at this time. A committee member of the church referred to the incident as an accident. Meanwhile, the NIA has been called in to conduct a thorough investigation and determine the circumstances surrounding the blasts.

The tragic event has raised questions and concerns within the community, especially due to the nature of the gathering and the fact that Jehovah’s Witnesses sometimes face criticism from the Peacefuls earlier!

The blasts occurred just two days after former Hamas chief Khaled Mashal virtually addressed an anti-Israel rally organized by Jamaat e Islami in Kerala’s Malappuram district!
