A joint operation by Handwara Police, the Army’s 21 Rashtriya Rifles and 92 Battalion CRPF has busted a terror module in the Handwara–Kupwara area, with security forces arresting an ex-terrorist, Manzoor Ahmad Bhat.
According to police, Manzoor Ahmad Bhat was allegedly operating in a “hybrid” capacity for the banned Hizbul Mujahideen (HM). A Chinese-made pistol, two magazines and 16 rounds of ammunition were recovered from his possession.
Ex-Terrorist Back Under Security Scanner
Police said they had received credible information about the activities of a former terrorist who was allegedly involved in the operation of the module.
Acting on the intelligence input, a joint team launched an operation at a location in Handwara town and apprehended the suspect.
The accused has been identified as Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, son of Mohd Sultan Bhat and a resident of Kruhmura in Handwara.
Pistol And Ammunition Recovered
During the operation, security forces recovered a Chinese-made pistol, two magazines and 16 rounds of pistol ammunition from Bhat.
Police said the arrested man is an ex-terrorist who had previously been arrested in two cases.
The recovery of a firearm and ammunition from a former terrorist now allegedly operating in a hybrid role has raised concerns over attempts to revive dormant terror networks in the region.
Probe Into Wider Network
A case has been registered at Handwara Police Station under FIR No. 232 under relevant provisions of law.
Investigators are now examining Manzoor Ahmad Bhat’s links with Hizbul Mujahideen and trying to determine whether other individuals are connected to the module.
The probe will also look into how the weapon and ammunition reached the accused and whether the alleged network was preparing for further activities.
The operation once again highlights the importance of intelligence-led coordination between the police, Army and CRPF in identifying former terrorists who may attempt to return to militant activities.
For now, Manzoor Ahmad Bhat remains at the centre of the investigation, with security agencies working to uncover the full extent of the network.
