The Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly achieved a historic milestone by passing the Madhya Pradesh Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, 2026 by voice vote. Following in the footsteps of Goa, Uttarakhand, Gujarat, and Assam, Madhya Pradesh has now become the fifth Indian state to adopt a uniform legal framework governing civil personal laws.
The legislation was introduced during the Monsoon Session and cleared despite intense sloganeering and walkouts by the Opposition Congress. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav termed the passage a “golden day” for the state’s 8.5 crore residents, declaring that the law delivers on the constitutional vision of equal rights and justice for all citizens regardless of faith.
Shattering the Appeasement Model
During the debate, the opposition led by Congress MLA Arif Masood and Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar demanded that the Bill be sent to a Select Committee for further scrutiny, arguing that it interfered with religious rights.
Replying to the opposition’s objections, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav criticized the Congress party’s track record, pointing out that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee had all envisioned a nation governed by a single constitution and uniform principles.
Mohan Yadav pointed out that while the Central and State governments have consistently moved to liberate women from oppressive practices, opposition parties continue to align with regressive personal law frameworks out of appeasement politics.
