Bihar Police have taken swift action following widespread outrage over viral videos showing the harassment and assault of two Class 10 students in Jamui district. Within hours of the video footage circulating on social media, law enforcement authorities identified the suspects and arrested three individuals involved in the incident.
The Incident
The incident took place on the evening of September 19 along the Jamui-Lakhisarai road. The two minor students—a boy and a girl—were returning home on a scooter after attending coaching classes when they were intercepted by a group of youths.
According to viral footage of the encounter, the accused forced the teenagers to stop, separated the boy from the girl, and surrounded her. Despite the minor girl repeatedly pleading to be let go, members of the group subjected her to physical harassment while others filmed the incident. The boy was also slapped during the altercation before the group eventually allowed the two to leave.
Police Action and Arrests
Although the victims’ families did not immediately file a formal complaint, Jamui Police took suo motu cognizance as soon as the videos surfaced online on Monday. Police teams traced the two minors, recorded their statements, and officially registered a First Information Report (FIR) against seven individuals.
Jamui Superintendent of Police (SP) Vishwajeet Dayal stated that law enforcement acted immediately to identify those visible in the footage.
“After the video came to our notice, we identified the victims, recorded their statements, and registered an FIR,” SP Dayal said. “Three accused have already been taken into custody, and active efforts are underway to arrest the remaining suspects.”
Administrative Response
State authorities reiterated a zero-tolerance policy toward harassment and crimes against women and children, directing local officials to ensure a thorough investigation.
The Bihar State Commission for Women has also taken suo motu cognizance of the case. Officials assured that the matter is being investigated on a priority basis and that all accused individuals will face strict legal proceedings.
