India is home to people of various religious beliefs. Among its vibrant tapestry, the Muslim community holds a significant place. In 2011, the Census data recorded the Muslim population at 17.22 crore. It constitutes 14.2% of the country’s total population. Fast forward to 2023, the Centre projects the Muslim population in India to reach 19.75 crore.
The Projected Population of Muslims in 2023
Minority Affairs Minister Smriti Irani provided a written reply in the Lok Sabha, disclosing that the projected Muslim population in India for 2023 stands at an estimated 19.75 crore. This estimation relies on the report of the Technical Group on Population Projections, released by the National Commission on Population in July 2020. According to the same report, the country’s total projected population in 2023 is expected to reach 138.82 crore.
Percentage of Muslim Households with New Property
Minister Smriti Irani also disclosed that approximately 50.2% of Muslim households have purchased or constructed a new house or flat for the first time after March 31, 2014. This data point reflects the growing aspiration and economic stability within the Muslim community. This has enabled them to invest in real estate and own property.
Key Indicators of Progress
To gauge the progress and development of the Muslim community, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation conducted the Multiple Indicator Survey 2020–21.
This survey aimed to collect data on select Sustainable Development Goals indicators. It sheds light on various aspects of the community’s well-being.
Improved Sources of Drinking Water
According to the survey, an impressive 94.9% of Muslim individuals reported having access to improved sources of drinking water. This significant achievement showcases the efforts made by the government and various organizations. The access to clean and safe drinking water is ensured for the entire population, including the Muslim community.
Access to Improved Toilets
Sanitation and access to proper toilet facilities are vital for public health and well-being. The survey revealed that 97.2% of Muslim individuals reported having access to improved toilets. This encouraging figure reflects the success of various initiatives and campaigns focused on promoting sanitation and hygiene practices across the country. These benefit the Muslim community as well.
Education and Economic Empowerment
While the data provided earlier indicates progress in certain areas, it is essential to focus on education and economic empowerment to further uplift the Muslim community. Ensuring access to quality education and skill development opportunities can pave the way for a brighter future for individuals and the nation as a whole.
Conclusion
The significant and increasing Muslim population in Bharat, currently over 213.34 million, is a matter of concern. The higher birth rates among Muslims have led to their percentage rising from about 9.8 percent in 1951 to 14.2 percent in 2011. However, do these progress reports make a difference amongst the Muslims of the country towards the current government?
