India From Importer To Exporter

India’s defence industry has achieved another important milestone.

During his visit to Seychelles, Prime Minister Narendra Modi handed over the fast patrol vessel PS Lespwar to the Seychelles Coast Guard. Built by Goa Shipyard Limited, the vessel will strengthen Seychelles’ maritime surveillance and help secure its vast Exclusive Economic Zone.

Along with the patrol vessel, India also gifted ambulances, utility vehicles and laser boats, further expanding defence and security cooperation between the two countries.

At first glance, this may appear to be another diplomatic gesture.

In reality, it reflects a much larger transformation.

For decades, India was one of the world’s largest importers of defence equipment. Fighter aircraft, submarines, artillery, helicopters and even basic military systems were largely purchased from abroad.

That picture is steadily changing.

The success of programmes such as BrahMos, Akash, Pinaka, Dornier aircraft, patrol vessels and indigenous warships has demonstrated that India is now capable of designing, manufacturing and exporting high-quality defence equipment.

Today, countries across Asia, Africa and the Indian Ocean Region are increasingly looking towards India for reliable and affordable defence solutions.

This is particularly important for the Global South.

Many developing nations require modern defence equipment but often find Western systems too expensive or burdened with political conditions. India offers an alternative, capable equipment, dependable partnerships and respect for the sovereignty of partner nations.

Unlike many major powers, India’s defence partnerships are not built around military alliances or geopolitical pressure.

They are built around cooperation.

The handover of PS Lespwar perfectly reflects this approach.

India is helping a friendly nation strengthen its maritime security while also showcasing the growing capabilities of its own defence industry.

This also demonstrates that Atmanirbhar Bharat is entering its next phase.

Self-reliance is not only about reducing imports.

Its true success lies in becoming a producer that others trust.

Every defence platform exported from India strengthens domestic manufacturing, creates skilled jobs, encourages technological innovation and enhances India’s strategic influence across the world.

As India’s defence exports continue to grow, so does its reputation as a responsible security partner.

The country’s role is gradually evolving from being one of the world’s largest defence buyers to becoming an important defence supplier.

The handover of PS Lespwar is therefore much more than the transfer of a patrol vessel.

It is another sign that Bharat is steadily emerging as a trusted defence manufacturer and security partner for the Global South.

And this transformation has only just begun.
