On Friday, August 16, Ayaan Sheikh allegedly targeted Devraj Mochi at a government school in Bhattiyani Chohatta.
Devraj fought for his life in the hospital for several days before he died on Monday. This tragedy unfolded just a day after the victim’s family claimed they could not visit him in the hospital. It further intensified a public outcry.
A City on the Brink
News of Devraj’s death sent shockwaves through Udaipur, sparking widespread unrest. A large crowd, including Devraj’s family, gathered at Mukherjee Nagar Chowk, rallied to MB Hospital. They demanded access to the boy. Protesters chanted slogans, voicing their anger and grief, reflecting the deep-seated tensions simmering beneath the surface.
The situation escalated quickly. Mobs took to the streets, expressing anger and frustration by setting vehicles ablaze, throwing stones, and attacking a shopping mall, causing widespread damage. The district administration recognized the gravity of the situation and imposed Section 144, banning public gatherings, and suspending internet services to restore order.
Government Response
In response to the tragedy, the local government offered a compensation package of 51 lakh rupees and promised a government job to a family member of the deceased. However, this gesture has done little to quell the anger of a community that feels under siege.
As tensions continued to rise, the administration took further action by demolishing Ayaan Sheikh’s house which was illegally constructed on forest land. This was a necessary step to address the crisis.
