Greenland is back on Donald Trump’s geopolitical dinner plate. However, this time, no one thinks it’s a joke or mere sound bytes – they all know Donnie Boy is not joking. The flexing American military muscle in Venezuela shows that the Trump Corollary of the Monroe Doctrine is in action.
And Trumpet has revived his obsession with the icy giant in the North, calling Greenland an “absolute necessity” for US national security. Translation: he wants it, he wants it now, and he wants the world to pretend this is perfectly normal.
Greenland and the Art of Calling It “Security”
Trump’s pitch for Greenland follows a familiar script. First, invoke the danger in the form of “National Security”. Then, talk about Russian ships here and Chinese vessels there. Suddenly, Greenland becomes the last shield standing between the USA and some vague Arctic apocalypse. Never mind that Denmark is a NATO ally that helps Greenland govern itself. It is protected under NATO security gurantees!! Never mind that Greenland already hosts the Pituffik Space Base, a key part of the USA’s missile early-warning system.
Trump now insists Denmark “can’t handle it,” and American ships were also there during the colonial era – so naturally, Washington must step in to safeguard the “democracy” of Greenland.
Geography does the heavy lifting for this argument. Greenland sits right on the GIUK gap. This gap is the maritime chokepoint linking the Arctic to the Atlantic. Control it, and you monitor every submarine and surface ship slipping south. Trump doesn’t talk maps; he talks dominance. To him, Greenland is less an island and more a giant surveillance camera floating in ice.
An Island Of Riches Tempts Donnie Boy
The USA pretends that it’s “not about minerals”! Well, the EU in 2023 listed every mineral known to modern warfare in Greenland. It’s home to precious Uranium that the USA imports from Russia! Greenland holds roughly 1.5 million metric tons of rare earth elements, including heavy REEs essential for fighter jets, missiles, and advanced electronics.
China controls nearly 70 percent of the global supply, and Trump wants Greenland to break that chokehold, preferably yesterday.
The presence of oil and natural gas sweetens the deal. Estimates suggest up to 31 billion barrels of oil equivalent under Greenland’s seabed, with offshore crude alone crossing 17 billion barrels. Add lithium, cobalt, copper, and gold – suddenly Greenland looks less like frozen wilderness and more like a trillion-dollar pantry. Climate change and global warming are making Greenland heat up at 4 times the speed of the rest of the planet! This grim reality only makes Greenland easier to access.
Melting ice turns yesterday’s impossibility in this Danish protectorate into tomorrow’s drilling permit for the USA under Trump!
Greenland and Europe Wake-Up Call
Here’s where the sarcasm writes itself. European powers spent 24 hours speaking softly about Venezuela, choosing “dialogue” over condemnation as the sovereignty of the nation was violated by the USA. Now Greenland, under Denmark, faces pressure from the same playbook – only this time the pressure does not come from Russia or China – it’s from Washington.
Denmark is a founding NATO member, yet it finds itself hearing Donnie talk about Greenland as he did about Venezuela!
USA’s arguments are eerily similar to those used against non-aligned states, with words like “security concerns”, “regional instability”, and “strategic necessity” woven into speeches.
Trump even appointed a special envoy to Greenland, because nothing says respect for sovereignty like sending a man to “lead the charge” for annexation. Danish leaders call it unacceptable. Greenland’s own prime minister says the island is not for sale. Trump hears all of that and responds with a shrug and another speech about national interest.
A New Version of Imperialism is Born
The irony is brutal. Europe preached rules, norms, and democracy in the face of Venezuela. But now Greenland is on Donnie’s menu. By refusing to condemn the actions of Trump in Venezuela, the EU allowed a new version of Imperialism to be born. Now they face Donnie Boy – the Western Hemisphere’s new bully! Can you politely discuss sovereignty and collaboration when the US military wants to take over your backyard? Can you lecture others about international law when Greenland becomes a bargaining chip?
Trump showed quickly that “concern” turned into US Military Action – He wanted Venezuela – He took Maduro!
Now he wants Greenland!
This island sits in the Arctic “Sweet Spot” – it’s valuable and vulnerable! Europe discovers that “Democracy” and “Sovereignty” sound lovely in speeches. It sounds far less convincing when an ice-covered island with rare earths and natural gas enters the conversation. And that is the real joke! They hate Russia – for protecting its national interests and attacking Ukraine. They hate China – for wanting to control the South China Sea or demanding Taiwan! But, they are unable to do anything about the Trump regime and their demand for Greenland!
Greenland isn’t just about ice, minerals, or ships – It’s about power and how quickly polite principles melt when something valuable lies underneath!
