Ujjain, January 24, 2026 – The town of Tarana in Madhya Pradesh is reeling under curfew today after a brutal display of communal violence. On Friday afternoon, immediately after Jumma Namaz (Friday prayers), a Muslim mob took to the streets, unleashing a coordinated attack that targeted public property, Hindu homes, and local businesses.

The violence was triggered by a premeditated assault on Sohail Thakur, a district leader of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), the previous night. What followed was not a spontaneous clash, but a rampage that has left the town scarred and the majority community in fear.
The Trigger: A Targeted Attack on a Cow Protector
The violence began on the evening of January 22 with a direct assault on Sohail Thakur Bundela, the head of VHP’s Gau Seva Prakoshtha (Cow Protection Cell).
According to police reports, Thakur was standing near a temple in the Sukhla Gali area when he was surrounded by a group of Muslim men. The accused—identified by police as Ishan Mirza, Sappan Mirza, Shadab (alias Idli), and Salman Mirza—accosted him.
While initial reports suggested a minor dispute, Thakur stated from the hospital that the attack was ideological. He alleges the group targeted him specifically for his work against illegal cow slaughter and “Love Jihad” in the region. The attackers beat him with iron rods, leaving him with critical head injuries.
Friday Fury: Mob Targets Hindu Homes After Prayers
Tensions boiled over on January 23 after Friday prayers concluded.
-
The Mobilization: Eyewitnesses report that as crowds exited the mosques, they did not disperse. Instead, a mob formed and began a rampage through the town.
-
Arson Spree: The mob targeted the local bus stand, dousing vehicles in fuel. At least 12 to 15 buses were set on fire, sending thick black smoke billowing over Ujjain.
-
Targeting Hindus: In a disturbing escalation, the mob moved to residential areas. Reports confirm that Hindu homes were specifically targeted with stones and petrol bombs. Windows were shattered, and families were forced to lock themselves indoors as the mob shouted slogans.
-
Vandalism: Several shops belonging to the Hindu community were vandalized. A timber yard was also set ablaze late Friday night.
Police Action: “Bulldozer Justice” Demanded
The Ujjain Police, led by SP Pradeep Sharma, had to use tear gas and lathi charges to push back the rioters. A curfew (Section 163) is now in force, banning all gatherings.
Police have arrested five key accused—including Ishan and Sappan Mirza—and detained over 15 others. Charges of attempted murder and rioting have been filed.
Local Hindu organizations have refused to accept mere arrests. Staging a sit-in at the Tarana police station and reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, they are demanding that the administration bulldoze the illegal properties of those who orchestrated the attack, a punitive measure often used in the state against rioters.
The Pattern: “Namaz and then Violence” Ujjain
The incident has sparked outrage across the country. Social media users and local residents are pointing to a “disturbing pattern” where Friday prayers are used as a launchpad for violence.
The timeline is undeniable: Assault on Thursday -> Prayers on Friday -> Mob Violence immediately after.
For the residents of Tarana, a town that has largely remained peaceful, the message from the mob was clear: this was a show of strength designed to silence those who oppose their activities.
Conclusion: An Uneasy Silence Ujjain
As of Saturday morning, Ujjain is a fortress. Police boots march the empty streets, but the anger is palpable. The attack on Sohail Thakur and the subsequent targeting of Hindu homes has shattered the town’s trust. The community now waits to see if the government will deliver the “strict action” it has promised against the rioters.
