The Controversial Legacy and Policies of Gandhi

Must Read

For decades, the state sponsored narrative projected Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi as the flawless Father of the Nation. Every criticism was buried, and every policy blunder was repackaged as spiritual enlightenment. However, a rigorous examination of historical archives, contemporary documents, and Gandhi own writings reveals a troubling record of decisions that severely compromised Hindu interests and undermined the national security of India.

1. Funding the Enemy During the Kashmir War

In January 1948, Indian soldiers were actively fighting Pakistan backed tribal raiders in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Cabinet, led by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, took the logical national security decision to withhold the remaining 55 crore rupees owed to Pakistan from Partition asset divisions. Patel refused to transfer state funds to an aggressor actively shedding Indian blood.

Gandhi launched an ultimatum fast to force the government to reverse its decision. Under immense emotional blackmail, the Cabinet capitulated and released the funds. This massive financial injection directly aided the Pakistani war effort against Indian troops. Gandhi prioritised a self engineered moral gesture toward an enemy state over the immediate safety of Indian soldiers.

2. Advising Hindu Victims to “Die Bravely”

During periods of catastrophic communal violence, including the Moplah Hindu genocide, the Noakhali massacres, and Partition riots, Gandhi response remained disturbingly one sided. Instead of demanding justice or endorsing self defence, he repeatedly preached total submission to Hindu victims.

Gandhi explicitly instructed Hindus facing forced conversions and brutal violence to face death cheerfully and refrain from defending themselves or harboring anger against their attackers. He maintained that the complete annihilation of Hindus and Sikhs would be acceptable if it proved his philosophy of non violence. This doctrine of absolute non resistance demoralised the Hindu community at its most vulnerable historical moment.

3. Injecting Pan Islamic Radicalism Through Khilafat

One of the most catastrophic political miscalculations was the decision by Gandhi to link the national freedom movement with the Khilafat Movement in the 1920s. To secure Muslim support, Gandhi mobilized masses behind an extra territorial religious cause aimed at restoring the Ottoman Caliphate.

This move legitimised religious extremism in Indian politics. The radicalization generated by the Khilafat agitation directly fueled the Moplah massacre of thousands of innocent Hindus in Kerala and laid the ideological groundwork for the eventual demand for Partition.

4. Special Luxury vs Revolutionary Suffering

While thousands of freedom fighters suffered torturous incarcerations in the Cellular Jail in the Andamans, Gandhi experienced confinement under vastly different conditions. During the Quit India Movement, he was interned at the Aga Khan Palace in Pune, a spacious mansion equipped with private gardens, personal staff, and comfortable accommodations.

This stark contrast highlights how the British regime treated Gandhi compared to uncompromising revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh, Veer Savarkar, and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. The colonial authorities recognized that the passive philosophy of Gandhi posed far less of a threat to their empire than armed resistance.

5. Disturbing Personal Experiments

Following the death of Kasturba in 1944, Gandhi conducted controversial brahmacharya experiments. He routinely slept naked with young women, including his teenage grandnieces Manu and Abha, as well as his personal physician Sushila Nayar, claiming it was a test of his celibacy.

These practices caused severe distress among his closest associates. Prominent staff members and allies resigned in protest against what they viewed as an outright abuse of patriarchic power. Gandhi persisted with these disturbing personal rituals even as the nation burned through the horrors of Partition from 1946 to 1947.

Reclaiming Historical Truth

The saintly image of Gandhi was carefully constructed through decades of Congress political dominance and selective history writing. The documented facts show a leader whose insistence on absolute non violence, unchecked appeasement, and questionable personal conduct inflicted severe costs on Bharat. A mature nation must judge historical figures by the concrete consequences of their actions rather than state sponsored mythology.
