Supreme Court Exposes Bengal Jungle Raj: NIA Probe Ordered in Malda Incident

Must Read

On April 1, 2026, the absolute collapse of constitutional machinery in West Bengal was broadcast for the entire nation to see. A violent mob in the Muslim-dominated Kaliachak-II block of Malda district surrounded the Block Development Officer (BDO) premises. For nine agonizing hours, they held seven judicial officers—including three women and a 5-year-old child hostage. These officers were simply fulfilling their constitutional duty under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process to clean up the electoral rolls. Consequently, when the police finally managed to evacuate the trapped officials around 1 AM, the radicalized mob mercilessly pelted stones at their rescue vehicles.

Supreme Court Slams Bengal Government

The horrific siege in Malda did not go unnoticed by the highest court of the land. In a late-night emergency intervention, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant intervened directly to save the officials. The following day, the Supreme Court slams Bengal government, delivering one of the most scathing rebukes in recent history.

The CJI explicitly termed the incident a “pre-planned, calculated, and motivated” attack designed to browbeat the judiciary. Furthermore, the Court described the terrifying situation as a “complete failure of civil and police administration” and labeled the state’s inaction as “criminal contempt.”

The Willful Complicity of the State

What makes this incident deeply sinister is the sheer paralysis of the state police and top administration. While judicial officers and a starving 5-year-old child were trapped without food or water, the state’s top brass was mysteriously unreachable. The Supreme Court shockingly revealed that the Chief Secretary could not even be contacted during the crisis. This blatant abdication of duty forces a deeply litigious question: Was the state police instructed to stand down while the mob intimidated the judiciary? The Supreme Court has rightfully ordered an NIA or CBI probe into the incident and issued show-cause notices to the DGP and Chief Secretary to explain their highly suspicious inaction.

Protecting Illegal Infiltrators?

To understand the motive behind this mob violence, one must look at the demographics and the electoral stakes. The Election Commission’s SIR process resulted in the deletion of over 63 lakh dead, duplicate, and untraceable voters from the rolls. Kaliachak has long been a notorious hub for illegal immigration, smuggling, and radical elements. Therefore, this organized mob was not protesting for democratic rights; they were aggressively fighting to protect their illegal vote bank. By allowing a mob to physically threaten the very officials tasked with identifying fake voters, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) ecosystem is sending a clear message that illegal infiltrators will be protected at all costs.

Mamata’s Excuses and the Threat to Democracy

Instead of taking moral and administrative responsibility, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee immediately resorted to political blame games. She shockingly claimed ignorance about the hostage situation until midnight and accused the Election Commission and the BJP of plotting to impose President’s Rule. However, the facts remain undeniable. When the state completely fails to protect the extended hands of the Supreme Court, it is no longer just a law and order issue—it is a direct assault on the Republic of India. Ultimately, the Supreme Court has made it clear that West Bengal is the “most polarized state” in the country, and the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) is the only way to prevent a total descent into Jungle Raj.
