From BrahMos To Boots-Make In India Soars!

Amid all the news surrounding India’s defence exports crossing Rs. 21,000 crore mark and reaching new heights. There is another interesting news surrounding the Make In India success story. Recently, it has come to notice that “Made in India” boots have become the first choice for the Russian army.

The Boots Story…

Crafted in Bihar’s Hajipur, these Made in Bihar specialised safety boots are Russian army’s first choice. Hajipur, as such is known for its agricultural products. However, recently, it has come to spotlight and is receiving international acclaim for its footwear manufacturing prowess.

A Hajipur based, Competence Exports private limited company, is manufacturing these highly sought after safety boots. In fact, in addition to producing safety boots for the Russians it is also manufactures designer boots for the European markets. The company’s General Manager, Shib Kumar Roy, told ANI, “We started the Hajipur facility in 2018, and the main interest is to generate local employment. At Hajipur, we make safety shoes that are meant to be exported to Russia. Total exports are for Russia, and we are also slowly working on Europe and will launch in the domestic market soon.”

Talking about its uniqueness, Mr. Shib Kumar Roy said that the boots are not only lightweight but also have specialised features in the sole. They can also withstand extreme weather conditions such as -40 degree Celsius and are slip resistant. He said that as the company manufactures these boots taking into consideration all such conditions. They are receiving good response from Russia. In fact, it has become one of the largest exporters to Russia. As per ANI, the company exported 1.5 million pairs worth 100 crore last year. Furthermore, it intends to increase its footprint by 50% next year.

Another interesting aspect, is that company is boosting jobs for the locals. The company’s MD Danesh Prasad, said that one of their ambitions is to boost employment in the state. He further highlighted that at present, 70% of its workforce are women! While stating that the Bihar government is supporting and promoting industries but still improvement in infrastructure like roads etc. is required.

Local To Global…

Apart from exporting safety boots to Russia, the company intends to develop high end shoes for international brands. It has already started negotiations with a Belgian company as well. As per Council for Leather Exports, Indian leather is expected to grow from current $17.3 billion to $47 billion by 2030. Exports are are likely to more than double in coming 6 years.

Overall, India’s Make In India success story is a story of many such local crafts and brands going global.

From exporting BrahMos, to ‘Made in Bihar’ Boots to exporting Kashmiri willow bats.

India is moving in full speed, capturing global attention and new markets. Above all towards its vision of  “Atmanirbhar Bharat!”
