Maharashtra Govt Declares Gaumata As ‘Rajyamata’

On 30th September, the Maharashtra government issued an order and bestowed the status of ‘Rajyamata-Gaumata’ to indigenous cows. The Eknath Shinde led government made this announcement via a government resolution signed by Governor CP Radhakrishnan of Maharashtra. In an official statement, the Shinde government cited how cows have been a revered animal since the Vedic period in Hinduism.

Speaking to ANI, Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis said, “Indigenous cows are a boon for our farmers. So, we have decided to grant this (‘Rajya Mata’) status to them. We have also decided to extend help for the rearing of indigenous cows at Goshalas.”

According to the statement issued by Maharashtra Chief Minister’s office, the cabinet has decided to provide a subsidy of 50 Rs. per day for rearing of indigenous cows. The move aims at promoting the welfare of indigenous cows, which is worshipped as mother in Hinduism since time immemorial.

Concerns Over Dwindling Population…

Even though there are a variety of breeds that exist throughout the country. The number population of the indigenous cows have been decreasing at an alarming rate. Maharashtra is home to several indigenous breeds of cows like the Dangi and Shavdabhat found in Northern Maharashtra. Then there is the Devri and Lalkanari breed which is found in Marathwada area. However, there has been a notable decline in their numbers due to growing preference for cross breed cows, which yield more milk. This shift in preference and the dwindling numbers of these indigenous cows has alarmed the authorities. For according to the census of 2019, the numbers of these native cows had fell by 20.69%.

In other to address this issue, the government decided to take this decision. The Maharashtra Goseva Commission will manage the initiative. Under this scheme, each district will have a Gaushala Verification Committee. Overall, it intends to provide economic support to the struggling Gaushalas, in order to reverse the decreasing population of these cows.

The government believes that this move will encourage farmers to invest in health and care of the indigenous cows. For these cows are a symbol of devotion in Hinduism. They and are revered as a mother in our country. In fact, since time immoral, they have held a unique place in our society. Referred to as the Kamadhenu and Gaumata, they are considered as a symbol of prosperity and purity. In Sanatan Dharma, it is believed that all the deities and gods reside in Gaumata. Thus, it is worshipped and revered so much. Its contribution extends beyond human well being and agriculture. No puja is complete without material related to Gaumata. Besides this, they also plays a vital role in our ayurvedic medicines and treatments, such as the “Panchagavya treatment.”
