NITI Aayog recently revealed its SDG 2023-24 report. The report reveals that India has made an impressive progress in the SDG’s. The latest data shows that India’s overall SDG score has risen from 66 in 2020-21 to 71 in 2023-24. India has made significant progress in eliminating poverty, providing decent work and economic growth. The score has improved from 57 in 2018 to 71 and this is a significant milestone in the SDG journey.

Mr. BVR Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog said, “Targeted intervention by the government has helped India achieve significant improvements across 16 goals set under the SDGs.”
This was also highlighted by the report findings. It shows that targeted government interventions has helped India improve its SDG score. This includes construction of over 4 crore houses under PM Awas Yojana and constructing over 11 crore toilets. Other initiatives being- giving 10 crore LPG connections and providing tap water connections to over 14.9 crore households under Jal Jeevan Mission etc. All such schemes have helped India progress ahead. Mr. BVR Subrahmanyam reiterated this by saying, “India is not only on track but also ahead of others in achieving most of the targets under SDGs.”
Uttarakhand And Kerala Get The Top Spot…
As per the SDG index, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Goa and Himachal Pradesh have emerged as Top performers among all states in the overall score. In fact, Uttarakhand and Kerala jointly securing the top spot.
Uttarakhand has improved from 9th position in 2019 to achieving the top spot jointly with Kerala in 2023-24. The state has improved significantly with its score being 79, which is much higher than the national average of 71.
On this achievement, CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, congratulated all the people of the state. He said, “This performance has been achieved with the blessings and cooperation of the people of the state.” He further thanked all the state officials by saying that the achievement is a reflection of the hard work and initiative of all in the state.
On the other hand, Bihar with 57 score, Jharkhand 62, and Nagaland 63 were placed at the bottom of this years index. Among the union territories, the top five performers were Chandigarh, J&K, Puducherry, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Delhi. Interestingly, between 2018-2024, Uttar Pradesh has been the fastest moving state with an increase of 25 in its score. Followed by J&K with 21 and Uttarakhand with 19 score increase.
Overall, the scores of different states range from 57 to 79 this time which is much higher than the range of 42 to 69 in 2018. Furthermore, among all 16 goals, highest progress has been made in GOAL 13 i.e. climate action. Its score has increased from 54 in 2020-21 to 67 in 2023-24. Thereby, indicating substantial progress. However, we need to make efforts to improve GOAL 5 (Gender equality) as it currently has a score below 50.
