On August 14, 2026, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and British engineering giant Rolls-Royce unveiled a strategic intent to jointly design, develop, and manufacture an indigenous combat engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. This move marks a monumental shift in India’s defense sector, bringing the country’s largest private conglomerate into one of its most critical and technologically demanding aerospace initiatives. The partnership aims to combine Rolls-Royce’s century-long expertise in advanced propulsion with Reliance’s massive technology, manufacturing, and execution scale.

The Vision: A Dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex
Rather than merely assembling parts, the companies plan to explore the establishment of a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India. This facility is envisioned as a specialized center of excellence capable of handling the entire lifecycle of a combat engine: from design, development, and manufacturing to testing, production, and long-term through life support. By establishing an end-to-end ecosystem, the initiative aims to localize intellectual property and create a sovereign supply chain.
Driving Strategic Autonomy
The partnership directly aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India) initiative, addressing a longstanding vulnerability in India’s defense posture—its heavy reliance on foreign suppliers for fighter aircraft propulsion.
Anant Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries, emphasized the strategic necessity of the move: “India’s strategic autonomy requires sovereign capability in critical technologies. Our intent with Rolls-Royce is to combine their world-leading expertise in advanced propulsion with Reliance’s technology, manufacturing, scale, and execution capabilities to build an indigenous aero-engine ecosystem in India”.
Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgic echoed this sentiment, describing the collaboration as “a major milestone towards building a robust, self-reliant aerospace ecosystem in the country”.
The AMCA Challenge and Global Competition
India’s AMCA is an ambitious fifth-generation twin-engine stealth fighter project, with a prototype rollout expected around 2028. The aircraft requires a high-thrust engine in the 120-kilonewton (kN) class.
While the strategic intent between Reliance and Rolls-Royce is a massive development, they do not yet have the final government contract. The Indian government is actively evaluating foreign technology partners, with French aerospace firm Safran historically viewed as a strong contender for the joint venture. Rolls-Royce’s competitive edge in this bid hinges on its offer to develop the engine entirely in India, transfer technology, and hand over the intellectual property to the Indian government, backed by Reliance providing the necessary domestic industrial muscle.
Looking Ahead
At this stage, the announcement remains an expression of strategic intent; details regarding financial investments, ownership arrangements, and exact timelines have not yet been formalized. However, the scope of the collaboration extends far beyond a single fighter jet. Both companies intend to leverage the proposed Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex to explore broader opportunities across defense, civil aerospace, and emerging power and propulsion systems.
