Historically, Khalistani activities have been concentrated in “Five Eyes” countries like Canada and the UK. However, the Zagreb incident reveals a shift. By targeting Croatia, a key member of both the EU and NATO, these elements are attempting to sabotage India’s burgeoning Trade Deals in Europe.
The “26-26” Campaign: Threats to Republic Day
Responsibility for the vandalism was claimed by the banned outfit Sikhs for Justice (SFJ). Terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun framed the vandalism as a “political message” of self-determination. He specifically targeted India’s Republic Day 2026, threatening attacks on the national capital. This comes at a sensitive time, as EU leaders are set to attend the celebrations in New Delhi as chief guests to finalize a historic security and defense partnership.
Visuals circulating online show the Tricolour being taken down under the cover of darkness, while slogans such as “Khalistan Zindabad, Hindustan Murdabad” and “26/01” were written on the boundary wall. The embassy signboard was also defaced. The incident marks the first reported breach at India’s mission in Croatia in over four decades.
MEA’s Response
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has condemned the act in the strongest terms, labeling it as “trespassing and vandalism by anti-India elements.” India has raised the matter forcefully with Croatian authorities, reminding them of their international obligation to protect diplomatic missions.
“Such actions speak of the character and motives of those behind them. Law enforcement everywhere should take note.” — Official Statement, MEA
Looking Ahead
As security agencies intercept “26-26” chatter across the internet, the focus is now on ensuring the safety of the Republic Day parade and the visiting EU dignitaries. The incident in Croatia has only strengthened the resolve of New Delhi and its European partners to deepen their counter-terrorism cooperation.
