Islamist Outfits Attempt to Desecrate Sacred Thiruparankundram Hill: Hindus Stand United in Protest

In a blatant attempt to disrupt the sanctity of a revered Hindu site, members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) tried to perform Qurbani (animal sacrifice) on the Thiruparankundram Hill near Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The SDPI is the political arm of the banned Islamist outfit Popular Front of India (PFI).

This sacred hill is home to the ancient Subramaniya Swamy Temple, one of the six sacred abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Murugan. It holds immense significance for Hindus.

The attempt to offer Qurbani near the temple was thwarted by local Hindus. Members of Hindu Munnani firmly resisted the move, ensuring that the sanctity of the hill was upheld.

A Blatant Provocation in Subramaniya Swamy Temple

On January 18, a group of Muslims, led by leaders of Islamic Jamath, attempted to enter the hill. They brought goats and chickens for slaughter at the Sikandar Badushah Dargah. The police, acting on appeals by Hindu groups, denied permission for the sacrifice.

The Madurai district administration had previously allowed only prayers at the dargah. Animal sacrifice was explicitly prohibited.

Hindu leaders like Solaikannan of the Indu Makkal Katchi (IMK) raised the alarm well in advance. He filed appeals with the police to stop the sacrificial rituals. He emphasized that allowing such activities would desecrate the hill, a sacred site for Hindus.

The BJP’s Tamil Nadu president, K. Annamalai, also condemned the attempt. He highlighted the deep Hindu history of Thiruparankundram Hill. He also criticized the ruling DMK government for its Muslim appeasement policies.

“The hill is not just a place of worship but a vital symbol of our cultural and spiritual heritage,” he asserted.

Previous Incidents on Thiruparankundram Hill

The December 27 Incident

On December 27, 2024, tensions arose when a group of Muslims attempted to bring goats and chickens for slaughter at the dargah on Thiruparankundram Murugam Temple Hills. The area, holding special significance to Hindus as it houses the Murugan Temple, was declared off-limits for such activities by the police.

Officials stopped Syed Abu Dahir, a resident of Malaiyadipatti, and his family at the base of the hill. The incident sparked a solidarity protest involving over 20 Muslims.

January Protests Over Mosque Access

Earlier this month, over 100 members of the Sikandar Mosque Committee and Aiyykiya Kootamaippu Jamath were temporarily detained. The members had gathered to demand the reopening of the mosque on the hill and sought permission to offer namaz there.

The protesting Islamist groups claimed on January 5 that Sultan Sikandar constructed the Sikandar Badushah Thozhugai Pallivasal approximately 400 years ago.

Systematic Encroachment and Provocation in Subramaniya Swamy Temple

The Thiruparankundram Hill has long been under threat of encroachment. Provocations by Islamist groups have added to the tensions. Local Hindus have alleged that under the pretext of religious festivals and rituals, parts of the hill are being systematically occupied by Muslims.

The Islamist agenda, many argue, aims to erase the Hindu identity of the hill. It seeks to establish the area as an Islamic site instead.

In recent years, tensions have escalated. Groups like the SDPI actively seek to assert dominance over this sacred Hindu site. Their activities include erecting flags and organizing protests. These actions have repeatedly disrupted communal harmony.

“These actions are not about religious practices. They are deliberate attempts to insult and erase Hindu traditions,” said a local Hindu leader.

A Sacred Legacy Under Threat ,Subramaniya Swamy Temple

Historical records confirm that the Subramaniya Swamy Temple officially owns Thiruparankundram Hill. The hill’s peak houses a Kashi Vishwanath Temple, a sacred lamp post, and the historic Kallathi tree.

Despite these landmarks of Hindu heritage, Islamist groups have tried to rename the hill as “Sikandar Malai.” They falsely claim it as an Islamic site.

Efforts are ongoing to protect the hill. Hindu leaders have appealed to bring the area under the jurisdiction of the Archaeological Department. This move would help preserve its temples, ancient inscriptions, and Saivite history.

The Broader Threat of Islamist Groups

The SDPI and its parent organization, the PFI, have been repeatedly accused of fueling communal hatred. They have consistently targeted Hindus and their sacred spaces.

Although the PFI is banned, its political arm continues to operate. It perpetuates the same divisive agenda under a different guise.

Security experts warn that these groups aim to undermine India’s cultural fabric. “This is not just a local issue. It is part of a larger Islamist agenda to destabilize India and erase its Hindu identity,” said a security analyst.

Need for Strict Action

The incident at Thiruparankundram Hill is a stark reminder of ongoing efforts by Islamist organizations. Their goal is to disrupt Hindu traditions and assert dominance over sacred spaces. Hindus must remain vigilant and united to protect their heritage from these insidious threats.

The Hindu community’s peaceful resistance to the attempted Qurbani shows its resilience. However, the government must take stronger action against groups like the SDPI. This will ensure that such provocations are not repeated.

The sanctity of Thiruparankundram Hill, like many other sacred sites across India, must be preserved at all costs. This is not just about one hill. It is about protecting the soul of a civilization.
