Vikram Misri is a name that Bharat shall forever remember in the wake of Operation Sindoor. In the high-stakes arena of international diplomacy, few figures have stood as resolutely as Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
A seasoned diplomat with a career spanning over three decades, Misri has been at the forefront of India’s foreign policy, navigating complex geopolitical landscapes with unwavering commitment.
However, Bharat’s troll army shot the messenger that brought them the news of the “understanding” of the “stoppage of hostilities” between India and Pakistan. They subjected Vikram Misri and his family to a torrent of online abuse, highlighting the perils faced by public servants in the digital age.
Vikram Misri and His Service to the Nation
Born in Srinagar, Jammu, and Kashmir, in 1964, Vikram Misri embarked on his diplomatic journey by joining the Indian Foreign Service in 1989. Over the years, he has held pivotal positions, including serving as India’s Ambassador to Spain, Myanmar, and others. However, the most notable one was being part of the Indian Diplomatic mission in China during the Galwan Valley clashes.
His tenure in Beijing was marked by critical negotiations aimed at de-escalating tensions along the Line of Actual Control, showcasing his adeptness in crisis management.
Misri’s expertise is not confined to bilateral relations; he has also been instrumental in shaping India’s strategic policies. As Deputy National Security Advisor from 2022 to 2024, he played a key role in formulating responses to emerging security challenges. His appointment as the 35th Foreign Secretary in July 2024 was a testament to his extensive experience and deep understanding of global affairs.
Vikram Misri Caught in the “Ceasefire” Crossfire
The recent escalation in hostilities between India and Pakistan began not on May 7th but on 22nd April 2025. When Pakistan nurtured terrorists who shot Hindu tourists in Pahalgam – Bharat decided to avenge the Sindoor of its widows. Operation Sindoor’s precise, measured, and intel-based attack on 21 terror camps in 9 sites jolted Atankistan.
The resultant exchange of the hostilities brought the two nuclear-armed neighbors perilously close to full-scale war.
In this volatile context, Vikram Misri’s diplomatic acumen was put to the test. He and his team ensured that the Indian Armed Forces had room to do their job while they kept the global powers at bay. While working with the defense team, he led the MEA’s diplomatic team from the front. Unfortunately, it also included that he was the one to announce that the Indian DGMO agreed to a “pause” in hostilities at the request of the DGMO from Pakistan.
However, Misri’s announcement came after US President Trump’s social media announcement. Trump’s assertion that the ceasefire was brokered by American mediation was like a Nuclear Bomb in the information vacuum that Indian netizens were forced into during the tense war-like situation! Hence, what followed was a complete meltdown of emotions. Thereafter, the nationalists figuratively decided to shoot the messenger of this ill news – Vikram Misri!
Vikram Misri – A Kashmiri Pandit at the Helm of Bharat’s Defense
Misri’s identity as a Kashmiri Pandit adds a poignant layer to his involvement in India’s stance on Kashmir. He hails from a community that faced persecution and displacement. Thus, his leadership in addressing a conflict rooted in the Kashmir region carries profound symbolic weight.
Vikram Misri’s presence at the forefront of these discussions serves as a testament to the resilience and contributions of Kashmiri Pandits to the Indian nation.
In a landscape often marred by religious and sectarian divisions, Misri’s role challenges the Jihadis that seek to target Hindus in Muslim-majority regions. His commitment to upholding India’s secular and inclusive ethos is evident in his diplomatic engagements. Thus, reinforcing the nation’s pluralistic values on the global stage.
Targeting of Misri’s Family Members
Despite his commendable service, Vikram Misri was subjected to intense online trolling. Some Indians vented their frustration by labeling him a “traitor” and “deshdrohi” despite his efforts in Operation Sindoor. The vitriol extended to his family, particularly his daughter, Didon Misri. Didon is a law graduate who has worked with international human rights organizations – including the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.
Her past involvement in providing legal assistance to Rohingya refugees in the Rakhine region was misrepresented as that of Bharat – leading to a barrage of abuse and the doxxing of her personal information.
What made it worse, that Didon once contributed to the anti-national platform of “The Wire.” Thereby, murkying the waters regarding her stance on India, leading to vile attacks on her and Misri. Such attacks stand widely condemned by civil service associations and former diplomats. The IAS and IPS Associations expressed solidarity with Misri and his family. All political parties and organizations denounce the unwarranted personal attacks on civil servants performing their duties with integrity.
Standing in Solidarity with a Dedicated Public Servant
The targeting of Vikram Misri and his family was so vile that the public servant had to lock his social media profile. Such words and actions are not only unjust but also detrimental to the fabric of public service. Civil servants operate under the directives of the government, executing policies aimed at safeguarding national interests.
Undermining the efforts of Diplomats through personal attacks erodes the morale of those who dedicate their lives to the nation’s service.
Society must recognize and respect the contributions of individuals like Misri. A momentary emotional response can lead to the lifetime scarring of a dedicated public servant. The burden of Misri and his team may not ever be fully disclosed to the world. However, society should understand that their work often involves making difficult decisions under immense pressure. Hence, not just those in uniform, these men out of uniform also deserve our support and appreciation.
Let us stand together in solidarity with Vikram Misri and his family.
In the face of unwarranted vilification, let us thank the military, Misri, and others unknown faces – who like him – did their job so that the men in uniform could serve justice to the victims of the Pahalgam, Pulwama, Uri, and 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
