A fire broke out at the world’s largest religious gathering, the Mahakumbh Mela, in Prayagraj. The media circus turned it into a ‘panic moment’ in the Mahakumbh Tent City. Naysayers began to celebrate the tragedy in play at this spiritual gathering.

Some media houses reported exaggerated numbers or details of the fire. However, the swift response of authorities averted the potential tragedy in the making. A fire resulted in cylinder blasts that engulfed 18 tents but resulted in no casualties. Thereby, demonstrating the exceptional safety measures in place to protect millions of pilgrims.

Mahakumbh Fire Contained in Record Time

The Mahafire started at 4:10 pm in Sector 19 near the Akhil Bharatiya Dharm Sangh and Gita Press tent area. Reportedly the fire started from somewhere in the western direction of the cooking tents. As per the Gita Press representative, the fire did not originate in their cooking tents. However, another version states that a cooking fire spread to the 13 cooking gas cylinders kept together in the vicinity causing a massive explosion that rose to the height of 30 feet. Irrespective of the cause, the fire spread to the 280 huts and 6 tents. Some reports state that 3 were harmed by the fire and 2 were injured in the resultant stampede.

Despite the flames quickly spreading to neighboring tents, the situation was brought under control within just 20 minutes.

35 fire trucks and tenders stationed responded to the emergency immediately. They contained the blaze before it could escalate. Local authorities, including police and fire departments, worked in perfect coordination to evacuate people from surrounding tents. No lives were lost, and no major injuries were reported. Prayagraj District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar and UP Minister AK Sharma praised the prompt efforts of the emergency services.

“This was a collective effort that ensured safety for everyone present. Ma Ganga and Hanuman Ji protected us,” Minister Sharma remarked.

The Mahakumbh Mela is a monumental event for the entire Sanatani world. Nearly 5% of the global population, i.e. 400 million, is visiting Prayagraj throughout Mahakumbh. Hosting such a massive gathering is no small feat. Every corner of the Kumbh Tent City is equipped with fire tenders, disaster response teams, and emergency services. The swift evacuation of people and immediate containment of the fire showed the effectiveness of these preparations. While the fire damaged tents and belongings, the real success was in safeguarding lives amidst such a densely populated area.

DIG Vaibhav Krishna reassured attendees that the incident was under control, urging them to continue their spiritual journey without fear.

CM Yogi Adityanath personally visited the site and assessed the situation. His direct involvement, along with Prime Minister Modi’s inquiry into the incident, highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of every pilgrim.

The Mahakumbh Mela’s massive scale makes it a logistical challenge, but this incident showcased the preparedness of the authorities.
