Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced significant legislative changes during a BJP state executive meeting in Guwahati. These changes aim to address concerns over demographic shifts and protect indigenous communities. Speaking at the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, CM Sarma outlined plans for a new law imposing lifetime imprisonment for “Love Jihad“.
Stringent Measures Against “Love Jihad”
The Chief Minister declared that his government would introduce a law converting the punishment for “Love Jihad” to life imprisonment. This initiative is part of the BJP’s broader strategy to curb forced religious conversions in the state.
Domicile Policy for Government Jobs
CM Sarma unveiled a domicile policy restricting government jobs to individuals born in Assam. This measure aims to address the state’s demographic changes, which Sarma described as a “huge concern” and a “matter of life and death.” The new policy, set to take effect within the next two months, ensures that only those born in Assam will be eligible for government employment. This move aligns with Sarma’s pre-election promise to create one lakh government jobs, a promise his administration is on track to exceed.
Land Sale Restrictions
To protect indigenous land rights, Sarma announced laws restricting inter-religious land sales. These laws will require the Chief Minister’s permission for land transactions between Muslims and Hindus. Additionally, in certain areas of the undivided Goalpara district, land sales to individuals from specific communities will be entirely prohibited to safeguard the remaining land owned by indigenous people.
The Chief Minister also introduced legislation to protect tribal land rights. This law will establish micro tribal belts and blocks, safeguarding small pockets inhabited by tribal and other backward communities.
Protection of Religious Sites
Sarma announced measures to protect land around religiously significant sites in Barpeta, Bordowa, and Majuli. Under the new law, only locals will have permission to purchase land in these areas, ensuring that even people from other parts of Assam cannot settle there by buying land. The government remains open to adding more sites to this provision based on public suggestions.
Addressing Demographic Concerns
CM Sarma emphasized the urgency of these measures, stating, “We can’t push anyone to Bangladesh, but we will take every step within our power to protect our future.” The legislative changes reflect the BJP’s commitment to preserving Assam’s indigenous culture and addressing demographic challenges.
These announcements mark a significant shift in Assam’s legislative landscape, aiming to protect the rights and interests of indigenous and tribal communities while addressing concerns over demographic changes in the state.
