Dharmendra Pradhan Resigns Over NEET Row, Says Students Must Not Become Victims Of Politics

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has resigned, taking moral responsibility in the aftermath of the NEET-UG paper leak controversy and the protests that followed. In a public letter addressed to the nation’s youth, Dharmendra Pradhan said he had submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that students’ futures do not become casualties of political conflict.

Recalling his long association with the education sector as a student, teacher and reform advocate, Dharmendra Pradhan said he had always believed that a transparent and inclusive education system is essential for nation-building. He thanked Prime Minister Modi for the opportunity to serve and said working for the aspirations of Bharat’s youth had been his greatest responsibility.

Dharmendra Pradhan acknowledged that irregularities had surfaced during the NEET-UG examination held in May. He noted that the Centre responded by handing the investigation to the CBI, cancelling the examination and conducting a fresh test. He also highlighted the government’s decision to shift NEET to a computer-based format from next year to improve transparency and strengthen the examination process.

The former minister said the successful conduct of the re-examination, attended by over 20 lakh students, reflected the collective efforts of the Centre, state governments, district administrations, parents and students. He added that the recently declared results ensured that deserving candidates could continue their academic journey without further uncertainty.

While accepting responsibility, Dharmendra Pradhan expressed concern that the issue had increasingly become a subject of prolonged political confrontation. Referring to the ongoing protests, he appealed that students should not be drawn into divisive politics or lose focus on their education and careers.

Explaining his decision, Dharmendra Pradhan said his resignation was not about protecting his personal image but about placing the interests of students above all else. He reaffirmed his commitment to public service and said he would continue working for Bharat and its youth in whatever role the future holds.

With his resignation, the government has sought to reinforce the principle of ministerial accountability while signalling that restoring confidence in the country’s examination system remains a top priority.
