Nepal recently held its highly anticipated general elections in March 2026. Following massive Gen-Z protests, the political landscape has completely shifted. Now, a 35-year-old rapper-turned-politician named Balen Shah is rapidly emerging as the frontrunner for Prime Minister. His newly formed Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is currently sweeping the polls. However, behind his popular sunglasses and youth-icon image lies a very concerning reality. Many observers note that his political rise is heavily fueled by an aggressive anti-India stance.
The Ultimate Hypocrisy
The most surprising part of his political agenda is his own educational background. Balen Shah did not get his higher education in Nepal or Western countries. Instead, he received his master’s degree in structural engineering from Visvesvaraya Technological University in Karnataka, India. He directly benefited from the Indian education system. Yet, he completely ignores this reality today. He frequently uses aggressive rhetoric against Bharat to manipulate young voters and secure his political power.
The “Greater Nepal” Provocation
Shah’s anti-India posturing became undeniable when he directly challenged India’s territorial borders. During his tenure as the mayor of Kathmandu, he officially installed a “Greater Nepal” map inside his office. This highly provocative map brazenly claims sovereign Indian territories. It falsely shows parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand as historical Nepali land. This was a calculated move designed to provoke New Delhi and fuel extreme nationalism among his supporters.
Attacking Shared Culture and Cinema
Furthermore, his hostility extends far beyond geopolitical border disputes. Balen Shah has actively targeted our shared cultural heritage. In 2023, he aggressively banned the release of Bollywood films in Kathmandu. He created a massive controversy over the movie Adipurush, objecting to a dialogue that called Mata Sita the “daughter of India.” By constantly creating these unnecessary controversies, he intentionally creates a deep divide between the citizens of two historically close nations.
A Dangerous Geopolitical Game
Geopolitical experts are raising massive red flags about his sudden rise to power. His social media history is filled with highly inflammatory rants. In late 2025, he posted explicit abuses directed at multiple countries, including India. If a leader with such extreme “Greater Nepal” delusions becomes the Prime Minister, regional security dynamics will drastically change. India and Nepal share an open border. Consequently, an unpredictable leader in Kathmandu could easily allow hostile foreign forces to exploit Nepali soil.
Time for Strict Vigilance
Ultimately, the Indian government can no longer ignore this growing political shift across the border. Balen Shah is no longer just a local mayor seeking attention; he is poised to lead a neighboring nation. India has heavily invested in Nepal’s infrastructure, supplied vaccines, and provided employment to millions. New Delhi must remain highly vigilant. We must strictly counter any leader who dares to claim sovereign Indian land or spread hate against our nation.
