Bangladesh Hindus Rise Against Islamist Threats

Must Read

A massive wave of protests has erupted across Bangladesh as the minority Hindu community stands up against systemic atrocities by radical Islamist groups. The immediate trigger was the blatant desecration of an image of Bhagwan Ram in the Gaibandha district, alongside aggressive threats that forced the suspension of a major 81-foot Bhagwan Ram statue project in Palashbari. In response, thousands of Hindus took to the streets of Dhaka on Friday, June 19, 2026, launching a powerful torchlight march from the Shahbagh intersection to the National Press Club, defiantly chanting “Jai Sri Ram” and demanding immediate state protection.

This sudden, coordinated uprising marks a significant turning point for the minority Hindu community that has endured targeted violence, property destruction, and systemic fear for over a year.

The Target

The radical intimidation directly targeted a major cultural milestone for the region. The halted work is part of a massive 22 crore Bangladeshi Taka (approx. ₹15.6 crore) project at the Sri Sri Radha Govinda Temple complex in Palashbari. The ambitious project includes:

Local Islamist groups staged hostile demonstrations opposing the construction, culminating in the public defacing and burning of Bhagwan Ram’s photograph. Citing extreme safety concerns and severe fear, Haridas Chandra Das, President of the Temple Committee, announced they had no choice but to suspend construction to preserve local law and order.

The 72-Hour Ultimatum

Led by organizations like the Hindu Mahajot, the protesting minority has moved from fear to active resistance. The community has issued a strict 72-hour ultimatum to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s administration to arrest the culprits and guarantee the safe resumption of the temple’s construction.

The National Committee for Puja Celebrations has already announced that if the government fails to take decisive, concrete action within the timeframe, the agitation will expand into a synchronized nationwide protest across all 64 districts of Bangladesh. A formal memorandum detailing the ongoing, unaddressed atrocities is also being sent to the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

The massive demonstrations prove that the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh is refusing to be quietly erased or intimidated. By taking over the streets of the capital, they are forcing both the local administration and international observers to confront the harsh reality of radical religious extremism targeting their civilizational roots.
