India has once again made history. On September 25, 2025, Bharat successfully conducted the first-ever Agni-Prime rail-based missile test. Developed by DRDO, this next-generation intermediate-range ballistic missile with a range of 2,000 km was launched from a mobile railway platform, making India one of the few nations capable of deploying nuclear-capable missiles from rail tracks.
The Agni Legacy
The Agni series missiles have been the backbone of India’s nuclear deterrence since the 1990s. From Agni-I to the long-range Agni-V, these systems ensure credible reach against Pakistan and China. The Agni-Prime missile marks a new chapter — it is lighter, more precise, and technologically advanced. With this rail-based launch, the Agni family now embodies mobility, accuracy, and survivability like never before.
Make in India: From Dependency to Dominance
For decades, India relied on foreign imports for weapons. That dependency is ending. Under the current government, Make in India has revolutionized defence — from fighter jets and drones to carriers and missile systems. The Agni-Prime rail-based launcher is a symbol of this transformation: designed, developed, and tested entirely in Bharat. Beyond self-reliance, India has also seen tremendous growth in defence exports, supplying advanced systems to friendly nations. This reflects not just strategic independence but also that no foreign power can dictate terms during a crisis.
Expanding the Launch Platforms
India already deploys nuclear capable missiles from road-mobile launchers, silos, submarines, and aircraft. The addition of a rail-based launch system makes tracking nearly impossible for adversaries, strengthening India’s deterrence. Looking ahead, Bharat is set to expand its sea-based nuclear power with more submarines, while also advancing hypersonic missile technology. Together, these moves secure India’s nuclear triad for the future.
Lessons of Operation Sindoor
When Pakistan carried out its misadventures during Operation Sindoor, Bharat learned the importance of survivability and unpredictability in modern warfare. Fixed launch sites are vulnerable to enemy strikes. Rail-based missile systems, however, can move across the nation, hide in tunnels, and merge with civilian networks. This ensures Bharat’s second-strike capability remains untouched a cornerstone of nuclear deterrence.
Beyond Missiles: A Message to the World
The Agni-Prime rail-based test is part of Bharat’s decade long defence transformation. From indigenous aircraft and advanced air defence to hypersonic weapons, India is no longer dependent or hesitant. It is now an assertive civilizational state, shaping its destiny with strength, confidence, and foresight.
