The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has operated at an unprecedented pace. In the Financial Year 2025-26 alone, the NHAI successfully constructed 5,313 km of National Highways, beating its initial target of 4,640 km by 15%. This equates to a staggering build pace of roughly 14.5 km per day just by the central authority. To fuel this massive expansion, the capital expenditure by NHAI for FY 2025-26 reached ₹2.44 lakh crore, fully supported by government budgets and internal resources.

Electrifying the Nation & High-Speed Rail

The transformation of Indian Railways stands as one of the most monumental achievements of the last decade. In 2014, only about 20% of India’s railway network was electrified. Fast forward to mid-2026, and the Indian Railways has officially electrified 99.6% of its Broad Gauge network, covering over 70,000 route kilometers. To put this into a global perspective, India’s rail electrification levels now completely surpass those of the UK (39%), Russia (52%), and China (82%).

This shift has not only modernized the network but also saved approximately 180 crore litres of diesel and around ₹6,000 crore in FY 2024-25 alone. Furthermore, the network is operating at peak efficiency, recording a massive 1,670 million tonnes of freight movement in FY 2025-26.

Simultaneously, India’s high-speed rail ambitions have transitioned from blueprints to physical reality. Throughout 2026, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) project recorded major milestones, including the completion of a 100-meter ‘Make in India’ steel bridge in Ahmedabad, significant tunnelling breakthroughs in Maharashtra, and the active commencement of track laying on viaduct sections.

The Defence Export Boom

Beyond domestic infrastructure, the last 12 years have completely transformed India from a massive defense importer into a highly capable exporter under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The numbers are historic. In FY 2025-26, India’s annual defense production surged to an all-time high of ₹1.78 lakh crore, representing a staggering 110% increase since FY 2020-21. Indigenous defense production has grown nearly four times compared to 2013-14 levels. Crucially, the private sector’s role is expanding rapidly, contributing an all-time high of around ₹42,000 crore to this total.

This manufacturing boom has directly fueled a massive spike in global sales. India’s defense exports hit a record ₹38,424 crore in FY 2025-26, a 63% surge year-on-year. The private sector contributed over 45% of these exports, proving that domestic industries are now successfully competing and winning trust in the global arms market.

The 12-Year Verdict

From laying down high-speed tracks to exporting advanced military hardware, the 12-year governance model has been defined by speed, scale, and self-reliance. By heavily prioritizing capital expenditure and indigenous manufacturing, India is rapidly securing its position as a dominant, self-sustaining economic and military power on the global stage.
