India took a historic stride in its digital journey as Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited’s (BSNL) fully indigenous 4G stack. With this, India has entered the exclusive club of just five nations worldwide that have developed their own telecom infrastructure.
The launch coincided with BSNL’s silver jubilee and signaled not just a technological breakthrough but also a bold step toward Atmanirbharta in the telecom sector.
India Joins the Elite Club
Until now, only Denmark, Sweden, South Korea, and China had deployed their own telecom equipment. With BSNL’s 4G rollout, India has joined this select league. Developed entirely with swadeshi technology, the 4G stack is cloud-based and future-ready. It can be seamlessly upgraded to 5G, ensuring that India does not depend on foreign vendors for critical infrastructure.
This achievement marks a shift from being a consumer of imported systems to a creator of indigenous solutions, boosting India’s global standing in the telecom sector.
Powering Connectivity Across Bharat
The government has commissioned over 97,500 new 4G towers, including 92,600 advanced sites, at an investment of nearly ₹37,000 crore. These towers will extend coverage to 26,700 previously unconnected villages, reaching remote border areas and regions affected by left-wing extremism.
In Odisha alone, 2,472 villages will be connected. Nationwide, over 20 lakh new subscribers will gain access to digital services. Through the Digital Bharat Nidhi initiative, the Prime Minister also announced 100% 4G saturation, ensuring connectivity for nearly 30,000 villages.
This is not just about mobile services, it is about empowerment. From education to healthcare, financial inclusion to governance, the rollout will bring digital opportunities to millions who were previously excluded.
Sustainable and Future-Ready
A striking feature of the new infrastructure is its sustainability. The new sites are solar-powered, making this the largest cluster of green telecom towers in India. This aligns with the country’s climate goals and showcases how technology and sustainability can go hand in hand.
Moreover, the indigenous 4G stack is designed for easy transition to 5G. This ensures that when Bharat takes its next leap, it will do so on its own foundations, without dependence on external powers.
