A 19-year-old student from Kalyan, Maharashtra, has died by suicide after he was allegedly assaulted in a local train for speaking Hindi. The victim, identified as Arnav Jitendra Khaire, was a first-year student at Kelkar College, Mulund.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on November 18, when Arnav boarded the Ambernath–Kalyan local train. During the journey, an argument reportedly broke out between him and a group of passengers who objected to him not speaking Marathi. His family claimed that four to five men assaulted and threatened Arnav, leaving him frightened and distressed.
Arnav reportedly deboarded the train at Thane and took another train back to Mulund. Later that evening, his father found his room locked from the inside. With help from neighbours, the door was broken open, and Arnav was discovered hanging by a dupatta.
The Kolsewadi Police have registered a case of accidental death and initiated an investigation. Officials confirmed that CCTV footage from the train and station premises is being examined to identify the accused.
Arnav’s family told police that he had spoken about the assault earlier that day and appeared visibly disturbed. They believe that the trauma and fear from the incident drove him to take the extreme step.
Police officials have stated that no arrests have been made so far, and inquiries are ongoing to verify the sequence of events.
A Moment of Reflection
The tragic death of Arnav Khaire is a reminder that intolerance, linguistic, regional, or religious, erodes the social fabric from within. What should have been a harmless conversation between commuters became a confrontation that cost a young life.
Authorities must ensure that those responsible are held accountable and that such incidents do not recur. Language is a bridge, not a battlefield, and India’s strength has always been in its ability to embrace, not exclude.
Arnav’s death should not become just another statistic; it must serve as a wake-up call to restore civility, empathy, and mutual respect in public life.
