Shaniwar Wada: The Pride of Peshwa Left Neglected

Must Read

Shaniwar Wada is a historic Peshwa fortress in Pune. It is an emblem of the grandeur and valor of many Peshwa kings. However, the footfall in this monument has been declining yearly. In 2021, ASI marked a significant decline in the number of visitors thereby causing a loss in revenue. Why is the footfall decreasing every year? Well, the answer is simple. The fading regal facade tells a tale of neglect and disinterest. The bad maintenance and the sad preservation of this architectural gem make visitors avoid this beauty on their trip to Pune. Let’s talk about the rich history and legend of Shaniwar Wada, shedding light on its current state of disrepair and the urgent need for preservation.

Shaniwar Wada was built in 1736 by Peshwa Bajirao – I. The fortress served as the seat of power for the Peshwas. Thus, it has witnessed many ups and downs of Maharashtra’s history. At one point of time thousands called this fort their home.

The building housed many legends in its walls, including the controversial couple shown in the much-debated ‘Bajirao-Mastani‘ Bollywood film. Some people even believe that the place is haunted by the Peshwa Narayanrao’s ghost begging for his uncle’s protection from his assassins.

The architecture of the Wada is steeped in legend and tragic deaths. The fort has 5 gates and a 16 sprinkler fountain. The well-planned courtyards and spaces highlight the splendors of the Peshwa rulers. Additionally, the walls of Shaniwar Wada are decorated with paintings of the times, adding to its mystique. To stand before this monument is to stand witness to the history of Maharashtra.

The teak in the Wada came from Junnar, while the stones in the foundation came from Chinchwad. A princely sum of ₹ 16,000 was spent on its construction and decoration.

Neglect and Lack of Timely Preservation

Despite its historical significance and grand walls, the Shaniwar Wada has faced neglect and inadequate preservation efforts over the years. The Wada is surrounded by crumbling buildings that were once part of history. Despite the recorded revenue of ₹ 2 crores, the ASI’s management leaves a lot to be desired.
