India is a powerhouse – a nation of 1.4 billion people, the fourth-largest economy, and the world’s largest democracy. However, once ceded to China in 1950, the UNSC Permanent Seat has long eluded India’s grasp. With each government building gaining clout only to fail at the final push, the demand for a seat at the table of power is no longer just about prestige. Bharat’s bid for the UNSC Permanent seat is about global equity.
As a founding member of the UN, India provides more than 2 Lakh forces to the UN peacekeeping force and plays an important role in countering terrorism in the subcontinent and the world.
However, the current UNSC structure reflects the post-WWII reality of 1945, not the multi-polar world of 2025. From Panama to France, Bhutan to Russia, global voices increasingly back India. Yet, China remains the lone P5 nation opposing India’s entry, even as Bharat positions itself as a leader of the Global South.

While India pushes for multilateral reforms, Beijing clings to Cold War-era hierarchies, shielding Pakistan-based terrorists and stalling India’s access to corridors of power.

South Asian Solidarity: 🇧🇹 Bhutan Backs Permanent UNSC Seat for 🇮🇳 India

India’s claim to a UNSC permanent seat has gained unprecedented international support in the last two years:
- The USA endorsed India’s bid multiple times. In 2024, US President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken reaffirmed US support during the G20 Summit and UNGA sessions.
- France and the UK restated their support in April 2025. They also went on record to support India’s candidacy in 2009 and again in 2024. Thus, affirming India’s responsible global conduct and contributions to peacekeeping.
- Russia, India’s longstanding strategic partner, also affirmed its support in April 20205 for India’s bid for UNSC Permanent Seat as part of a multipolar vision.
- Trinidad & Tobago, Panama, Bhutan, Slovenia, and the UAE have each called for India’s inclusion, recognizing its developmental success and consistent global engagement.
- The BRICS nations have sent support for India and Brazil’s bid for the expansion of the UNSC Council. Thereby, showcasing how all developing nations have faith in India’s vision for the world.
Meaningless. Ritual reiteration of past BRICS position.
Russia supports India’s permanent membership of the UNSC. China does not.
This is a formulation acceptable to the Chinese as it does not support permanent membership, only a greater role. https://t.co/QMmzMIaFS4

Yet, it seems that China stands firm in its silent opposition. There is no proven record of China’s rejection. However, the changes in the UNSC Council are a complex process that requires voting by its members. Such processes and voting systems are being manipulated by the Chinese Dragon to restrict India’s access to the UNSC Permanent Seat. Despite benefiting from the same privileges thanks to the “unelected” PM Nehru in 1950, Beijing refuses to share the table with its neighbor. Its reasoning?
- Asia already has a permanent representative (China) – a feeble argument in a region with over 4.5 billion people.
- China fears the growing influence of India. Thus, it projects rejection of India’s bid due to India’s membership in QUAD and G4. However, Bharat has consistently refused to compromise G4 unity (India, Japan, Germany, Brazil) or the QUAD agenda.
- Beijing continues to stonewall meaningful reform discussions by demanding a “comprehensive package” – diplomatic code for eternal delay.
Why India Deserves a Seat – Beyond the Numbers
India’s case is not merely about population or GDP or economy – it’s about contributions, credibility, and character.

Bharat is at the forefront of all aspects of Global Importance:
- UN Peacekeeping: Indian forces are among the largest troops serving the UN. Bharat shares over 290,000 soldiers serving in 49 peacekeeping missions since 1948.
- Sustainable Development: BRICS just supported India’s bid to host the COP in 2028. India’s soft power diplomacy of “A Friend in Need” has ensured its presence as a global leader in climate commitments, with the ambitious International Solar Alliance formed by India and France.
- Stability in Crisis: During the COVID-19 pandemic, India supplied over 100 countries with vaccines and emergency medicine under “Vaccine Maitri”.
- Middle Path Diplomacy: India’s neutral stance on Ukraine, Gaza, and Iran has ensured that its Olive branch of friendship is welcomed by all countries. Despite the 4-day skirmish with Pakistan under Operation Sindoor, Bharat strongly holds onto its role as a voice of reason and peace, not alignment.
Critics say India is a “fence-sitter.” But India sees itself as a bridge between the Global North and South, capable of navigating both worlds – something a reforming UNSC desperately needs.

Reforming the UNSC is not just about popularity. Instead, it requires changing the UN Charter, which needs:
- 2/3rd majority in the General Assembly
- Unanimous consent from all five permanent members (P5)

While China is overtly hostile, Western hesitations lurk in the shadows:
- Some US strategists worry India may not always align with US geopolitical goals, as seen in India’s abstentions on Russia-Ukraine or Israel-Gaza votes.
- European nations use “concerns” over India’s internal democracy metrics, particularly over the manipulated press freedom, minority rights, and economic inequality. Yet, India just surpassed the USA, Germany, and the UK in the economic parity index. Moreover, India remains the only nation where minorities are not only flourishing but also increasing in number.
Then there’s the Uniting for Consensus (UfC) group. This includes Italy, Pakistan, Turkey, South Korea, and others. All of them historically push to expand non-permanent seats only, denying a veto to new entrants.
Regionally, India’s leadership is contested by Pakistan. Sometimes, it faces tension with Bangladesh. Even Nepal and Sri Lanka were manipulated in the past by China’s checkbook diplomacy to obstruct India’s path.
In Conclusion: India at the Crossroads of Global Legitimacy

India’s fresh bid for a UNSC permanent seat is not a vanity project. Instead, it’s a moral and democratic imperative. The world cannot claim to be multipolar while locking out 1/6th of humanity.
China’s resistance is driven not by logic but by insecurity. As its own global image suffers under the weight of expansionism and suppression, Beijing fears a democratic, economically confident India rising alongside it in the same chamber.
If the world truly seeks a more representative, more credible, and more effective United Nations, then India must have a seat at the top tables of power, with a veto.
Otherwise, the UNSC risks becoming a museum of post-WWII power – irrelevant, unjust, and increasingly ignored.
